Real estate sector should be given industry status, LCCI demands
The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has urged the government to declare real estate sector as an industry.
It also demanded the government to not impose any new taxes on real estate sector as it is not only an important source of revenue for the government but is also providing direct or indirect employment to millions.
The demand was raised by LCCI President Sheikh Muhammad Arshad while talking to a delegation of Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Real Estate Agents Association, led by its Chairman Major Rafiq Hasrat at the LCCI.
The LCCI president said that real estate sector is an important and growing sector of economy and Pakistan spends billions of dollars on construction every year.
He informed the delegation members that LCCI is making all out efforts to solve the issues faced by the trade and industry at the earliest. The LCCI Industry has forwarded budget proposals to the government, he said.
He added that the ongoing projects under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) have a direct relation with the economic development and would also boom the real estate sector.
The LCCI president said that real estate sector is playing a significant role to promote the economic activities in the province. He said that the LCCI would extend maximum cooperation to DHA Real Estate Agents Association.
DHA Real Estate Agents Association Chairman Major Rafiq Hasrat said that the real estate sector could generate huge revenue for the government once it is declared as an industry. He said that government should establish a licensing authority for real estate agents which would also help trust building of the investors.
He informed the LCCI president that the association has designed courses for real estate agents to give them awareness about the day-by-day changing business techniques.
Former LCCI president Muhammad Ali Mian, former senior vice president Irfan Iqbal Sheikh and Executive Committee Member Nasira Taskeen also spoke on the occasion.

The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) has allowed pillar construction in residential buildings of more than two storeys on plots measuring 10 marla and above.
“The governing body of the LDA has amended clause 2.6.1 of LDA Building and Zoning Regulations for this purpose. Earlier, no pillar construction was allowed in residential buildings except apartments,” says a spokesman for the LDA.
In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the spokesman said the authority had also directed that all precautionary measures must be taken to ensure implementation of this permission in letter and spirit and proper enforcement action be taken in case of any misuse.
The LDA had been restricting the construction of residential building pillars on the premise that it could be converted into commercial building by removing the internal walls. In the recent events especially after 2005 earthquake, the frequency of seismic activities has increased, causing a loss of life, damage to property and public infrastructure. It is to be pointed out that a building of 10 marla and above, having a height of 45 feet including added basement and completely made of brick masonry, is vulnerable to seismic activity. The probability of collapse and adverse impact of an earthquake on such a building is far more than the normal buildings.
“A four-storey building constructed totally in masonry without any reinforced concrete framing for continuity and load redistribution is highly vulnerable to collapse and such construction needs to be discouraged.” It’s therefore necessary to amend the high-rise 4-storey residential building regulations by incorporating the RCC column as a compulsory part of a residential building having four or five floors to provide the necessary structural stability in order to withstand earthquakes, the spokesman explained.
ARRESTS: Price control magistrates of the CDGL on Tuesday had arrested 77 shopkeepers and imposed fine of Rs13,500 on others for overcharging, hoarding and selling substandard commodities in open market.

(PRESS CLIPING) LDA is going to construct a two-lane underpass at the Gurumangat Railway Crossing to facilitate flow of traffic between the Gulberg and Cantonment areas including DHA Lahore.
The new underpass will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs103.3 million. The two-way underpass will be connected with Hussain Chowk through Kasuri Road.
The underpass will be 13.6 metres wide. The height of the proposed underpass is 3.1 metres. Heavy vehicles like buses and trucks will not be able to traverse the structure.
Around 40,000 vehicles will use the planned underpass daily. The LDA will fund the project. Of its total cost, the LDA will spend Rs7 million on land acquisition and Rs5 million on shifting utilities.
In March LDA announced it will build a bypass from the point where Defence Road touches Multan Road to Sharaqpur at Lahore–Jaranwala Road in Sheikhupura district.
The initiative will be executed on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis. The authority has also floated a request for proposal (RFP) solicitation from local and foreign firms in connection with the project.
