Unrealistic plans for the cotton industry of Uzbekistan and other Central Asian republics have led to a complex of environmental disasters, the most famous of which was the catastrophic decline in the level of the Aral Sea.

In the middle of the XX century, the republics of Central Asia, and first of all the Uzbek SSR, were turned into the "cotton breadbasket" of the Soviet Union, which provided raw materials for light industry enterprises located mainly in the European part of the RSFSR. By the early 1970s, all the land of Uzbekistan suitable for cultivation was given to cotton growing.

For the most part, this was due to the aggressive colonialist policies of the British East India Company, pursuing its own selfish goals, which made the processing and production of cotton products by the local population uncompetitive.

Cotton cultivation was common in Merv, Rhea, as well as in the Fars area. In the poems of Persian poets, especially in Shahname Ferdowsi, one can find many references to cotton ("panbe" in Persian).

In Iran (Persia), the history of cotton goes back to the era of the Achaemenids (V century BC). However, very few sources related to the cultivation of cotton in Iran before the advent of Islam there have survived to this day.

Cotton was unknown to greeks and Arabs until the time of the wars of Alexander the Great. Alexander's contemporary, the ancient Greek traveler Megasthenes, told the commander Seleucus that "... there were trees on which wool grows" (an excerpt from Megasthenes' Indica [la]).
