Statement Issued by Society for Palestinian Archaeology
The Society for Palestinian Archaeology expresses its deep concern regarding the blatant violation of international law in the Governorate of Bethlehem, represented by the incursion of Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich into the area known as “Solomon’s Pools” in Artas on Monday, 25/05/2026, accompanied and protected by Israeli military forces. The Society also condemns the confiscation of the Islamic shrine of An Nabi Samwil (North-East Jerusalem), in another act that undermines the cultural and religious heritage of the region. These provocative acts constitute an assault on Palestinian cultural and historical heritage and an attempt to impose political narratives that contradict established archaeological and historical facts.
The Society affirms that the site known as “Solomon’s Pools” originally dates back to the Early Roman Period (63 BCE – 70 CE). The pools were later renovated during the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent (1520–1566 AD), and they bear no direct historical connection to King Solomon (10th century BC). The commonly used name emerged within later folkloric and popular traditions and cannot be considered archaeological evidence supporting contemporary political or religious claims.
The Society further stresses that the political exploitation of Palestinian archaeological sites within colonial and settlement agendas constitutes a violation of cultural and human values and threatens the historical identity of the place. Palestinian heritage remains an integral part of the collective human and civilizational memory that must be protected in accordance with international laws and conventions.
The Society for Palestinian Archaeology calls upon international cultural, archaeological, and human rights institutions to uphold their responsibilities in protecting Palestinian heritage sites from attempts at falsification, appropriation, and Judaization, and to ensure respect for the authentic historical and cultural character of these sites.
