THE “CALIFORNIA OF EUROPE” IS COMING TO THE ALGARVE. 🇵🇹 And I have a question…
Is that a good thing?
A recent Financial Times story has put Santa Bárbara de Nexe firmly on the international property radar, following the development of 11 luxury villas reportedly valued at more than €3 million each.
The investor behind the project believes the Algarve has the climate, lifestyle, connectivity and international appeal to become the “California of Europe.”
And from a property perspective, I can understand the thinking.
But there’s another side to this.
When international capital moves into a region, it can bring investment, jobs, better-quality development and increased global attention.
But it can also contribute to rising prices and change the character of the places people originally fell in love with.
So where do we draw the line?
Should the Algarve embrace becoming a global luxury destination — or protect what makes it uniquely Algarve?
As a buyer’s agent, I think this is a conversation worth having.
