“Land with an approved project” is a reassuring phrase found in many Portuguese property advertisements.

The collapse of Portugal’s planned €492 million lithium refinery is a reminder that economic development needs a long-term strategy, not just headline projects.

For those of us working in rural Portugal, the lesson is clear. Lasting prosperity won’t come from extracting resources alone. It comes from creating sustainable businesses, restoring communities and investing in projects that generate local jobs year after year.

Rural Properties has always believed the future of the interior lies in regenerating abandoned homes, bringing families back to villages and creating energy-efficient housing that people actually want to live in.

Portugal’s interior needs long-term investment that strengthens local communities, protects the landscape and builds lasting economic value.

That’s a strategy worth backing

€492 million refinery withdrawal leaves Portugal’s lithium strategy unravelling; Lifthium shelves Estarreja receiving EU strategic status

Portugal is expected to see the biggest rise in house prices in 2026, predicts S&P, as reported in idealista news.

Portugal is the European country where housing prices are expected to rise the most this year, according to Standard & Poor's Global Ratings (S&P).

The credit rating agency revised its forecast for the Portuguese market upwards by three percentage points, "reflecting the strong appreciation recorded in 2025".

It estimates that house prices will increase by 10% in 2026, placing the country at the top of Europe, ahead of Spain (9.1%), the Netherlands and Poland (both with 5.3%). Furthermore, the projected increase for the national market is more than double the European average, estimated at around 4%.

I do love this AI business although feel far too dense to use it properly.

I was sent this image of one of our properties from our local iad.pt agent, Mandy Walker.

I think it's remarkable how computers can help us.

Imagine trying to create this sort of image even five years ago...?

Portugal has some outstanding specialist suppliers.

This new wooden floor is now being laid at the Albergaria de São Pedro in Pedrógão Grande.

This particular wood was chosen with the buyer of this C16th property and is in total accord with the open volumes, light grey walls and cloud white ceiling woodwork that have defined this exceptional development.

The specialist wood supplier was Madeicentro, not far north of Coimbra, whose selection and service are highly recommended.
