The collapse of Portugal’s planned €492 million lithium refinery is a reminder that economic development needs a long-term strategy, not just headline projects.

For those of us working in rural Portugal, the lesson is clear. Lasting prosperity won’t come from extracting resources alone. It comes from creating sustainable businesses, restoring communities and investing in projects that generate local jobs year after year.

Rural Properties has always believed the future of the interior lies in regenerating abandoned homes, bringing families back to villages and creating energy-efficient housing that people actually want to live in.

Portugal’s interior needs long-term investment that strengthens local communities, protects the landscape and builds lasting economic value.

That’s a strategy worth backing

Portugal is expected to see the biggest rise in house prices in 2026, predicts S&P, as reported in idealista news.

Portugal is the European country where housing prices are expected to rise the most this year, according to Standard & Poor's Global Ratings (S&P).

The credit rating agency revised its forecast for the Portuguese market upwards by three percentage points, "reflecting the strong appreciation recorded in 2025".

It estimates that house prices will increase by 10% in 2026, placing the country at the top of Europe, ahead of Spain (9.1%), the Netherlands and Poland (both with 5.3%). Furthermore, the projected increase for the national market is more than double the European average, estimated at around 4%.

Portugal has some outstanding specialist suppliers.

This new wooden floor is now being laid at the Albergaria de São Pedro in Pedrógão Grande.

This particular wood was chosen with the buyer of this C16th property and is in total accord with the open volumes, light grey walls and cloud white ceiling woodwork that have defined this exceptional development.

The specialist wood supplier was Madeicentro, not far north of Coimbra, whose selection and service are highly recommended.

Final renovation work soon to commence at Travessa da Asnega in Pedrógão Pequeno, Sertã.

Our wooden rooves, painted in 'cloud white', seem to have become a Rural Properties trademark.

With around 175m2 over two floors plus a lovely 220m2 garden with mature orange tree, this beautiful cottage in a quiet location will suit many buyers looking for a key-in-the-door solution for under €200.000.

Housing law in Spain: rents rise and supply plummets, according to idealista news, showing in graphic detail what happens when governments politicise the property market.

The Housing Law legislation was created with the aim of containing rental prices and improving access to housing.

However, market evolution since 2023 paints a picture marked by three main trends: rising prices, a sharp drop in supply, and an unprecedented increase in competition among tenants.

Rents are now 30.7% more expensive in Spain, supply has decreased by 30%, and competition for housing has more than doubled.

Any predictions for Portugal...?

Who else has come across this half-way point on the EN2?

I discovered it while looking for an old house that had been recommended to me.

I must drive the entire length one day - maybe when fuel prices reduce from their current level!

Each and every visitor to the Rural Properties renovation in Pedrógão Pequeno, Central Portugal said how impressed they were by the cast iron radiators that we installed as part of the new central heating system.

We have been offered exclusivity on a range of similar, cast iron radiators which, as the resale cost would be entirely reasonable, is being analysed.

As for demand - would you use cast iron radiators in your next renovation? What are important factors for you, in addition to cost?

House prices in Portugal increased by 18.9% in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.

This is the second highest increase among European Union countries, and, according to Eurostat data released on April 7, 2026, they have practically tripled in the last decade as a whole, accumulating an appreciation of 180% between 2015 and 2025.
