New builds in rural Portugal don't exist. Or rather, they didn't.

It's not that I avoid them out of principle. It's simply that there was nothing to point people towards. The housing stock here is old, often beautiful, always characterful, and frequently a decade-long project before it actually feels like home.

I know this because when people get stuck, with bureaucracy, with builders, with damp walls that refuse to dry, they often end up knocking on my door.

This weekend Benfeita gets its first ever edition of Festival SAL - “Sobre a Liberdade”

A new creative gathering to celebrate April, freedom, and the wild mix of people that call this place home.

18 & 19 April, across Benfeita - workshops, performances, films, music, food, and conversations about what freedom means now. The idea: use art as a way to talk, listen, and connect - across languages, backgrounds, and histories.

There’ll be loads happening:

🪡 Felt Mural with Colectivo Arte Viva
🎭 Performance “As Portas que Abril Abriu” by Lotte Rozemarijn & Sara Vieira Marques (inspired by Ary dos Santos’ poem)
