Big update for anyone considering Portugal's Golden Visa: the path to citizenship just changed.

As of May 2026, Portugal's revised Nationality Law extends the wait for citizenship from 5 years to 7 years (EU and Portuguese-speaking country nationals) or 10 years (everyone else).

The residency clock now also starts from when your residence card is issued, not when you apply, which matters given current processing times.

Here's the reassuring part: the Golden Visa itself hasn't changed. Still a 5-year residence permit. Still around 7 days a year in Portugal. Still permanent residency after 5 years with full Schengen access for your family.

The real question is what you're actually after. If it's EU residency and lifestyle, this barely affects you. If it was specifically a fast passport, it's worth revisiting your plan.
