For part 14 of Things to Do in Madeira, we’re taking you to , located on the hills east of Funchal.

Situated approximately 500 metres above sea level, the gardens are known for their botanical diversity and views over the city. Madeira’s mild climate supports tropical and subtropical plants, including hibiscus and bougainvillea, alongside many seasonal species.

The gardens were established in the early 19th century by the Count of Carvalhal, who planted many of the original trees and began the camellia collection. The estate was acquired by the Blandy family in 1885, and some of the earliest plantings can still be seen today.

This 3D visualisation shows how the architecture responds to changing light, from the bright daytime interiors and pool terrace to sunset and the transition into evening.

Large glass openings connect the living areas with the exterior, while the upper balcony and ground-floor terrace provide separate outdoor spaces overlooking the surrounding landscape. After dark, the lighting design defines the villa’s structure and creates a more private atmosphere across the interior and outdoor areas.

For part 13 of our series Things to Do in Madeira, we’re taking you to Praia Formosa, the largest public beach in Madeira.
Located in São Martinho, around 10 minutes by car from the centre of Funchal, Praia Formosa is a two-kilometre-long complex comprising four beaches, with areas of pebbles and black sand.

Visitors can spend the day swimming, walking along the seafront or enjoying one of the nearby bars. The beach also has parking, changing facilities, a first-aid station, a children’s playground and a football pitch.
