Have you heard of the Non-Habitual Residents (NHR) tax regime in Portugal? It is a special tax regime which exempts you from paying taxes on global income. If you are living in Portugal, while receiving an income from other countries, you can apply for NHR to minimize the tax burn.

There are couple of benefits the NHR regime can offer you:

✅Transfer of money to Portugal without being charged for it;

✅No wealth tax;

✅A personal tax income treatment that is about to persist for 10 years;

✅Absence of minimum stay requirement;

✅A tax exemption for presents or succession to family members (the direct ones only);

✅20% flat rate for some Portuguese source incomes (self-employment or specific occupations). It is extremely profitable as long as the regular tax rates can reach 48%.

You can benefit from this regime during a 10-year period starting from the year of your registration as a tax resident in Portugal.

According to the Portugal's National Statistics Institute in 2022, tourist accommodation establishments in Portugal registered 26.5 million guests and 69.5 million overnight stays, which translated into increases of 83.3% and 86.3% compared to 2019.

The UK remained the main external market in 2022 representing 19.3% of overnight stays among non-residents. Followed by the German (11.5%), Spanish (10.8%) and French (9.3%) markets. The highest growth was recorded in the North American market (share of 7.5%), having increased by 327.4% (+26.9% compared to 2019).
