*** IMPORTANT ***
OORTUGAL – TOMORROW (June 3rd 2026) IS A GENERAL STRIKE DAY
Sectors linked to the public service are usually the most directly affected by strikes, and the June 3 strike is expected to be no exception.
- Schools Closed
You may find out at the last minute that your child's school is closed. If your child is 12 years old or younger and you have to miss work because the school did not open, be aware that this absence is considered family assistance leave.
- Transportation
* CP (Portuguese Railways): Approximately 25% of trains are expected to operate.
* Lisbon – Carris (buses and trams): Full service is expected during peak hours.
* Porto Metro: The Blue and Yellow lines will operate, although disruptions are expected.
* Lisbon Metro: No minimum service levels have been decreed. A service interruption is expected to begin at 11:00 p.m. tonight, June 2.
- Ferries on the Tagus River
No minimum services have been decreed for Transtejo/Soflusa ferry operations.
Since no minimum services have been decreed, ferry operations will depend on worker participation in the strike. For more information on available services, please check the real-time status of each connection under 'Next Departure' on the TTSL website or through the TTSL app.
Lisbon Metro and Transtejo are contesting the absence of minimum service requirements. The Arbitration Court decided not to impose minimum services due to the "limited duration" of the strike.
- Healthcare
Several doctors' unions have already announced their participation in the strike. The Portuguese Nurses' Union (SEP) has also confirmed that it will join the protest.
The nurses' strike will begin affecting services on June 2 due to the start of night shifts, while still ensuring the minimum services considered essential to meet "unavoidable social needs" previously defined.
A minimum level of activity equivalent to that of a Sunday or public holiday will be maintained in order to guarantee, among other things:
* Chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments;
* Dialysis services;
* Emergency care;
* Palliative care;
* Other essential healthcare services.
- Businesses and Gas Stations
If you are concerned about disruptions at supermarkets, you can rest assured. Since major retail chains are privately operated, they are expected to function normally. The same applies to gas stations, other retail businesses, and fitness centers (gyms), where the likelihood of significant disruption is very low.
