Timber-framed homes can stand for centuries! 🏡⏳🌿
🏡 Nearly 750 years of history… and still standing. 🇨🇭
Located in Schwyz, in central Switzerland, Bethlehem House is considered the oldest wooden house in Europe. It is believed to date back to 1287. 🪵
Today, it houses a museum, but it remained inhabited until the 1980s.
Little is known about the people who built it, although the layout of its two floors suggests that it may once have been a manor house. Its masonry base contains a 16th-century room decorated with wall paintings. Apart from a few elements, the room remains almost entirely in its original condition.
