IS YOUR DRIVING LICENSE VALID IN RUSSIA?

Foreign driving licenses are valid in Russia, if they are issued by the countries participating in the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. Still if you have a Russian residence permit, your home country driving license becomes invalid in Russia on the 61st day from the date when your residence permit was issued. To continue driving in Russia, you shall apply for Russian residence permit and to pass theoretical driving exam.

CAN AN EXPAT OWN A CAR IN RUSSIA?

A foreigner can own a car in Russia. He can bring his car from his home country for a period of no longer than 1 year (under the so called "temporary admission" customs regime). Also there is a possibility for those who have a Russian residence permit or just a Russian visa to buy and use a car in Russia, though only after such a car is promptly registered in his name at the road police authorities (also known as GIBDD). The car can be registered only for a period of validity of residence permit or visa.

NEW RULES REGARDING ON-LINE SHOPPING IN RUSSIA

The new customs regulations made it impossible to send parcels from on-line shops from abroad to Russia. DHL, TNT, UPS announced that they cannot deliver anything to individuals (corporate accounts are still functioning). However, Pony Express is still working, just so that you know... Another thing is that you should never send anything to Russia that's officially worth more than 1000 EUR, otherwise the amount of paperwork required and taxes levied will turn it into a nightmare. SOME RULES REGARDING POWER OF ATTORNEY IN RUSSIA.

According to Civil Code of Russian Federation, only powers of attorney for signature of limited types of contracts for which the notarial certification is obligatory shall be certified by the notary public.

Still most of authorities in Russia will require power of attorney in notarial form from your representative. If you are a foreigner and you Russian is not good enough for understanding the text of the power of attorney you would like to issue, a presence of professional interpreter may be required by a notary public.
