The key?

Having the right information ready before applying.

Here is what you need:

✅ Proposed company name

✅ National ID or valid passport

✅ Shareholders’ details and ownership percentages

✅ Directors’ details

✅ Business activities

✅ Physical business address in Rwanda

✅ Active email and telephone number

✅ Share capital details

✅ Beneficial ownership information

✅ Local office address

Submit your application online through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB).

Foreigners can own 100% of the company a Rwandan shareholder is not generally required.

RDB registration is free of government registration charges.

Please note Professional assistance costs are separate.

RDB’s stated processing time is 6 hours for a compliant application.

However,Incomplete documents or queries may cause delays.

Remember: registering your company does not automatically give you a residence or work permit.

RENTAL DEPOSIT REFUNDS IN RWANDA: WHAT SHOULD YOU CHECK?

You moved out.

You returned the keys.

Your landlord still has your deposit.

The landlord says there was damage. You believe you left the property in good condition.

Where do you start?

Before the disagreement escalates, check these five things:

1. Your rental agreement

What does it say about returning the deposit, deductions and the condition required at handover?

2. Outstanding payments

Are there unpaid rent, utility bills or other agreed charges? Request a clear breakdown.

3. The property’s condition
Compare photographs and inspection records from when you moved in and when you left.

Identify existing defects and any deterioration from ordinary use.

4. The proposed deductions
Ask the landlord to explain each deduction and provide supporting records, such as photographs, invoices or repair estimates.

5. Your handover records
Keep proof of notice, the move-out date, return of keys and any inspection or handover agreement.

For landlords: Document the condition of the property and explain proposed deductions clearly.

For tenants: Request the refund in writing, keep supporting evidence and document any settlement.

Whether a deduction is justified requires consideration of the agreement, the facts and applicable law.
A clear handover today can prevent a costly dispute tomorrow.
