Take a wood-fired shower outside the cabin. Showering in hot water under tall trees is exactly as good as it sounds. Hook up a cold hose for the chilly rinse between sauna rounds. Walk two hundred metres and watch the sun set while you swim in the sea. Wind down in the hammock staring at the sky. Pick blueberries off the deck and drop them into your morning yoghurt. Put on a record and pretend you're practising your first dance. A few people have got engaged here, so it isn't a stretch.

You eat, you walk, you sleep, you swim, you talk to someone. You get hot, you get cold, you do nothing. We even throw in an Instax camera so you can have happiness you can hold afterwards.

Some of us still don't quite believe we got to.

Last week brought guests from the Netherlands, Canada, and Sweden. This week the Austrians arrive. Next week, more Austrians, unrelated and unplanned.

June is our first time hosting anyone from Ukraine. Our first time hosting anyone from Spain. A family from Australia (not Austria again). Two Swiss bookings back-to-back. One Swedish booking in the middle.

That’s just June. The mad season is starting.

Eight countries finding their way to Humlegårdsstrand. A name you’ve probably never typed into a search bar. Most beautiful places have to scream for attention. This one mostly doesn’t. Almost nobody writes about it, and most Swedes have never been. No stores, no public transport, no way in except by car. A few cabins on a stretch of coast, and that’s about it. And yet here come the Ukrainians and Australians and Spaniards and Swiss, hiring cars at Arlanda and driving two and a half hours north.

We didn’t build the cabin to put Humlegårdsstrand on a map. We built it because we love it. That it’s doing the door-opening work for this stretch of coast is something we didn’t expect. We’re not going to pretend it doesn’t feel like something.

Sunrise this week is before 04:00. By midsummer it barely sets at all.

The good light here belongs to the wild ones. The ones setting an alarm for 03:30. The ones who never went to bed in the first place. These two were the second kind. Walked ten minutes from the cabin, watched it come up, walked back.

The faint of heart sleep through it. Fair enough. Most people do.

For the rest of us, late May through midsummer at Humlegårdsstrand is the good stuff. The light show that runs at hours that suit almost no one.

Coffee's on when you get back. The hammock's for the sleep you missed.

How did we not have a record player in this cabin from day one.

It’s here now. Previous guests, the records are waiting.

Also on deck. Literally. The wood-fired outdoor shower is sitting in pieces, ready by next week. Light a fire, hot water five minutes later. Temperature controlled so you can’t burn yourself. The thing is genius. We’ve been waiting for months to put it in front of guests.

Behind Hop Farm Beach, we don’t usually talk about us. We keep it about the cabin, the beach, the forests, the guests, the experience you’ll have when you arrive. But last night, for the first time since the cabin arrived, our family of five slept there.

We know what we’re pushing. Phones went in the box the minute we walked in. They stayed there.

The kids took a set of kubb into the forest and started a game on the mossy ground. We watched them through the window, the way you watch someone enjoying a thing they don’t know they’re going to remember. Our daughter found the hammock and her harmonica. She’s been teaching herself. Wrong notes, right notes, the hammock keeping time.

First fight of the night: who scoops the sauna water. Second fight: who takes the first cold shower. Fights with laughter. They kept coming, and it was perfect. A checkers game running next to a chess game. Bowls of chips and candy. A couple of beers, a glass of wine, a glass hit the floor and somehow didn’t break. One kid rolled three yahtzees in a single game and still came second.

One daughter wanted to sleep by the window to see the stars. She saw a shooting one. Whether she knew to make a wish, I have no idea. I haven’t gotten around to teaching her that one yet. Soon.

In the morning, we cracked the window for fresh air. The birdsong came in with it.

We drank coffee in bed. Never do that at home. Pulled out the little tray table, the one I sometimes wonder if anyone ever uses. Now I know someone did. Love that thing.

Our son climbed into bed to do a crossword. A small bird landed on the sill. A squirrel ran past, stopped, looked in, kept going.

Later, we walked 200 metres down to the beach. Our little family project. We raked the sand. Lit a fire. Roasted marshmallows. The whole thing was built for a picture: kids tearing across this beach barefoot, sand between their toes. Looks like this summer we get the picture.

One of our kids, walking out the door: ‘I want to live here.’

None of us argued.

We took this photo last week before two things happened. First: a storm knocked down most of these trees and smashed the deck. Second: snowpocalypse. It's an insane storm in the area right now with snow up to a metre in some places.

And through it all we keep thinking there's nowhere else we'd rather be than inside that cabin under a cosy blanket, playing board games or reading a book with someone we love.

Can't think of a better way to ring in 2026.
