Midday sun on a fall day while you lean your back on a tree and close your eyes facing the sun rays. Pop into the cabin for a coffee, put on a record, but close the curtains, the sun is a little strong after the stroll. Nina Simone is the record of choice, and it’s wild how many songs on it you recognise as covers. She’s the original.
After the fika it’s back in the sun for a few hours before trying the wood fire shower. It’s been a while since you lit a fire, so that’s the hardest part of the day. Then you stand under hot water in the cold forest air, steam coming off your shoulders, Nina still going somewhere behind you, and you catch yourself daydreaming about staring up into a sky full of trees. Except your eyes are open and that’s exactly where you are.

Sauna until you can’t take any more. Out onto the deck to cool down with a New York Times crossword. Maybe you’ll finish it, probably not, doesn’t matter. Rain comes through and leaves that smell behind. That smell. You know the word.
Eyes shut, listening to the last birds of the summer before they clear out south.
Somewhere in there you’ll work up the nerve for the wood fired shower. Most people stand beside it a while first, having a good think about it. Then it’s hot water on your shoulders, cold forest air on everything else, and you’re back out there three more times before you leave.
Back to the sauna. A glass of w**e while you have another crack at the crossword. Nah, skip it. Time to light a fire, those steaks aren’t going to grill themselves.

Guests keep calling it the best sleep of their lives. The quiet, probably. Or the forest air. Nobody has ever managed to explain it properly, which is fine. BEST SLEEP EVER works.
Then Happy Fluffy Cloud sent their duvets. These things are enormous. No edge to fight over, no cold corner, nobody dragging their half back at 02:00. You get underneath and disappear into your own little world, and the next thing you know it’s light out and the birds are waking you up. Not a bad alarm.
They’re on the beds inside, not strung up in the forest like this. You’d be forgiven for dragging one out here anyway.
Come and see if you can explain it. Or skip the explanation and listen to the birds from your own little world.

September at the cabin. A welcome chill in the evenings, and you’ll see your breath in the air when you step out of the sauna for a breather. If you’re feeling braver, light the outdoor fire shower and stand in the heat with the cool fall air on your back. The beach is steps away, the sand still warm from summer, the water cold enough to make you feel alive. This is our favourite season out here.

Last Saturday in August is Lyskväll here. Every house on the water puts candles out and the coastline turns into a line of small lights, as far as you can see in both directions.

Then at nine, someone out in the bay plays the national anthem on a trumpet. It carries across the water and everyone goes quiet.

Light a few candles, blow a horn, summer’s done.

Bergaliv (Bergaliv Landscape Hotel) has the mountain. We have the sea. For a handful of nights this autumn you can sleep by one and wake on the other. Sea to Sky.

Night one is the forest spa at Hop Farm Beach, a minute from the Baltic. Sit in the sauna, take the cold shower outside, warm up again under the wood-fired shower in the open air. Then down to the water for the sunset, and if you’re lucky, the northern lights.

Night two you’re on a mountain. Högloftet at Bergaliv is a timber house on stilts above the treetops, one big window onto the Ljusnan valley and an open terrace on the roof. It stands so lightly on the ground that on a windy night you can feel it move.

Then you come down off the mountain and Orbaden Spa is waiting. Salt bath, hot pools inside and out, every one of them looking at the river.

The idea came from two things. First, they’re both design-led cabins. Scandinavian minimalism: everything you need, nothing you don’t. Second, that Destination Hälsingland is Sweden’s hidden gem, and two cabins an hour apart are a good reason to come and find it.

Sea to Sky is on our website now. Link in bio, then Sea to Sky in the menu.

Sleep by the sea. Wake on a mountain.
