Clients have been asking why there are so many HDB flats sold for more than $1m and government is not doing anything about it.
HDB flats are supposedly built with the intent of being affordable & allowed Singaporeans' wealth to grow with the nation. So why the sudden uptick in HDB resale prices?

Truth is, there is a fine balance between meeting basic needs (everyone has a chance to buy a flat) vs meeting lifestyle wants (big floor plate units). The million-dollar flats that change hands are typically large floor plate units that HDB ceased to build. So it's a willing buyers willing sellers market. So I must congratulate the owners who have the hind sight to buy the EA/EM/Jumbo flats BTO or resale in the past. I also wish to congratulate the new owners who managed to get their dream flats of the size they want!

Much voices have been heard to request the resumption of building large floor plate flats especially after we saw how covid changed our needs for bigger flats to WFH. Nevertheless, with changing social/family/marriage fabric & composition, it is still HDB's priority to provide sufficient flats to meet basic demands. Large unit flat is good to have..... But we are adaptable & we can make do with what we can afford & needed in the market.
Nothing & no one is perfect. So long as more than 80% of the population needs are addressed, the policy can be considered effective.
