Happy to officiate the opening of the North-South Corridor ( ) Project Information Centre (PIC) yesterday, with my fellow MPs.
At 21.5km, the NSC will be Singaporeโs longest Transit Priority Corridor ( ). It will help to relieve traffic along Singaporeโs north-south transportation corridor and cater to different commuting needs, including that of public transport commuters and cyclists.
The NSC is designed to connect residents in the North (Woodlands/Sembawang/Yishun) to key destinations in Ang Mo Kio, Bishan and the city centre directly. When completed, the NSC will have dedicated bus lanes, a cycling trunk route into the city, and a viaduct/underground tunnels for vehicles for faster commute. With the NSC, bus commuters can expect to save an average of 10 to 15 minutes of travel time.
The NSC PIC provides an overview of the NSC project and some of the engineering challenges that would need to be tackled in the process of constructing it.
For example, the construction of the tunnel near MRT is challenging because it interfaces with the existing North-South Line (NSL) MRT tunnel. LTA engineers will need to use advance engineering methods to ensure safety and maintain operation of the existing NSL MRT tunnel, while minimising inconvenience to commuters as much as possible.
Visitors can also experience an immersive drive-through in the NSC tunnel via a computer aided virtual environment (CAVE).
Residents who are keen to understand more about the project, especially about the engineering work going into NSC, can visit the NSC PIC.
