These structural beams do more than support the roof, they also reflect the customs once practised beneath them.

The primary beam supports the roof ridge, while the secondary beam, 子孙梁 (zǐ sūn liáng), was traditionally used to hang lanterns. Across their surfaces, painted symbols of direction and geomancy reveal how structure, belief, and daily life were woven into the fabric of a Teochew home.

As you enter the main hall, where Gothic lancet windows stand apart from the House’s traditional Chinese architecture.

Likely added during its years with Christian organisations, they remain a trace of another chapter in the House’s history.

Can you spot where one craftsman’s work ends and another’s begins?

Through 对场作 (duì chǎng zuò), 2 teams of craftsmen worked across the House, each challenging the other to achieve finer detail and greater mastery.

Their rivalry has long since passed, yet its traces remain in every carving, curve and flourish. The next time you visit, pause and compare the details. What differences can you find?

Among the gold gilded details of the partition doors, an egret stands beside the lotus, forming a motif known as 一路连科 (yī lù lián kē).

Beside the partition doors, the 挂落 (guàluò) sit beneath the horizontal beam and between the columns, framing the space with carved detail.

Their proportions were carefully shaped around the columns, allowing the ornament to feel integrated into the architecture itself.

Look closely at the rear of the House, where Tuscan-order pilasters bring a European classical influence to its traditional Teochew architecture.

These features speak to the House’s evolving identity, shaped by its time as St Mary’s Home and School from 1906 and the Salvation Army’s headquarters from 1938.

As the last surviving residence among Singapore’s 4 Grand Mansions, the House of Tan Yeok Nee offers a rare glimpse into Singapore’s Teochew heritage.

Gazetted as a National Monument in 1974, it continues its story today as a heritage and lifestyle destination, home to a public gallery, event spaces and restaurants within its historic grounds.

Beneath the beam, pheasants and peonies are carved into the bracket supporting the structure above.

The detail reflects the tradition of Teochew woodcarving, with ornament worked into the timber elements of the architecture.
