Type of government and society needed in Singapore

Type of government and society needed in Singapore I am hoping to see a more caring and hardworking Singapore government and society for the sake of further generations

I just sent the following email to LTA. To the people who are reading it, please decide carefully whom you are going to vote in the next and subsequent GEs and also voice your opinions on whether the ministers and top civil servants' salaries are justified. (Let me say that we should not deny them the high salaries if they are doing a good job.)

Dear Andy
I seriously doubt your ability in reading and understanding the messages in my emails.
I said that the dim front panel display on the buses is very common. This means that not only the BYD buses operated by SMRT are suspect; the whole fleet of buses owned by LTA are suspects. Just fyi, yesterday, I saw another bus with the same issue, but I won't tell you which bus operator was running it. This is because you will check only those buses operated by that particular bus operator.
As I have said, whether you are going to resolve all these small but impactful issues or not does not concern me. I will just continue to post such issues on my personal page for all to see. I will let the people decide who should be in the government in the next and subsequent GE and let the people determine whether the salaries the people are paying them (and the top civil servants) are justified.
Let me repeat. The people continue to experience quite a no. of simple but impactful issues which can be easily resolved if only sincere efforts have been put in by LTA. (As I have said, such a carefree work attitude is very prevalent in many other government agencies and ministries too.)
In a recent interview of minister Jeffrey Siow by ST Chief Columnist & Senior Editor, Ms Sumiko Tan, he mentioned that he trusts the staff working under him. I agreed that they should be trusted. However, did he validate that trust every now and then? If he has not, it is just blind trust which is of little use.

These few days there have been quite a bit of discussion about learning dialects and how it is useful. This started owing to the recent release of a Teochew film, Dear You (《给阿嬷的情书》).

Please see my comments on two Facebook posts regarding this matter.

It is unfortunate that many people think it is good to learn dialects without knowing the need to prioritize. Do they have the time? Do they know English and Chinese well? Are they really concerned about the old folks who are not well educated?

Please read the comment that I have given on Tan Kin Lian's post.

Although I am a Teochew and my wife is an Hakka, my children do no really know the dialects other than a few words. It is a loss to them. Although I believe we need to preserve some traditions that come with the dialects, I have to be realistic that it won't help us to survive or earn money in this modern world. Furthermore, although many claim that many Chinese Singaporeans are bilingual in English and Mandarin, we are more like half-baked potatoes. (l believe it is the same for the other races.) Look around us and you will see that many of us can't even use proper English, which is the de facto world language. Many of us can't form a proper sentence when we write or speak. We have to use some words from dialects or other languages in the sentence. Many of us also can't use proper verb tenses or appropriate words, thinking that as long as the message gets through, it does not matter.
There are a few flaws in thinking that way.
1. The meaning of the sentence may get through but it is the wrong meaning. For example, using a present tense verb instead of a past tense verb conveys the meaning that the action is in the present or future moment when, in fact, it was in the past. This matters when it comes to legal matters or important events or when one wants to prevent misunderstanding.
2. Saying that using improper English is fine can reflect badly our attitude towards perfection or excellence. This matters when we want ourselves and the nation to progress well.
3.The people in other countries will not understand us if we don't use proper English. This can affect our ability to progress.
4. We have a finite time and we have to decide the things we need to focus on in order to progress or even run ahead of other nations.
5. Saying that using dialects or improper English helps the seniors is flawed. Instead of helping them, we are keeping them at the low intellectual level. This is similar to teaching someone a skill. You want to teach the proper skill, not one that is simple but lacks the necessary safe and important aspects.
6. If we use improper English with the migrant workers, we are also keeping them at the low intellectual level and are not helping them to progress.
The PAP government especially certain ministers like Lim Swee Say has done a great disfavour to the people by not emphasizing the need to use proper English.
Many people also have the wrong view that using bad English shows that the language is progressive. They are, in fact, making it regressive.
We can certainly learn the dialects and it is good to do that. However, let's do it like picking it up a hobby.

Yesterday,13 June 2026, SportCares organised the Family Day event at the Singapore Zoo. NTUC Health AAC at Lengkok Bahru was invited to bring some seniors to join in the event. My dear and I were two of those invited.
The event was indeed a great initiative by SportCares (for their members) and NTUC Health ACC at Lengkok Bahru (for the seniors).
However, there were a few incidents which marred the event and have done great injustice to those who really tried to make the event an enjoyable and memorable one.
1. The seniors were told to assemble at the NTUC Health ACC premises at 0700 hr. Many seniors including their children and grandchildren took their time to arrive at the meeting point, wasting others' time. While it is understandable that some seniors require more time and patience, we should not let them do it at the expense of other seniors. The buses finally left the location at around 0730 to 0745 hr.
2. There were too few staff members and volunteers taking care of the 3 busloads of seniors and there was poor coordination among them. If NTUC Health AAC does not have sufficient staff members and volunteers, it should not invite too many people to participate in the event.
3. During the lunch, there was poor supervision by SportCares staff members and volunteers to put up enough chairs for their members. It resulted in some of their members accusing and quarrelling with a helpful and thoughtful volunteer of NTUC Health ACC for reserving the seats for the seniors. (She was told to take the space at the extreme right of the ground.)
It is very important to remember the following points.
1. Do not organise an event where there are too many participants and few staff members and volunteers to help manage the event.
2. While we are sympathetic and empathetic to the seniors, we should not do it at the expense of wasting other seniors' time. (I, for one, have walking difficulty and do not like to waste time. Yet I always make sure that I can meet the requirements or deadlines. So, I expect many other able seniors and even those with a bit of phyiscal difficulties to do the same.) If we don't do that, the situation will get worse when the number of seniors increases.

Isn't it sad that some humans need to resort to using non-human means to keep themselves occupied, entertained and be a part of the society?
These no-human means can be useful occasionally and in very unique situations, but it should not be used too readily. We need to encourage them to participare in social events, go out to the parks and gardens daily, make friends with others readily, etc.

Mr Tan Kian Lim mentioned in one of his Facebook posts that we need to get more local people to take up grassing cutting job and other low-level but meaningful jobs. He talked about offering good salaries, safe working conditions, etc. I gave my comment as follow.

Besides getting more local people to cut grasses or take up other low level but meaningful jobs, the government and the people have to do their part to reduce the reliance on too many foreign workers.
The people can do the following things to help reduce the tediousness of the work and the time taken to do the work by the workers by
1. keeping floors, tables and toilets of food centres and coffee shops clean, dry and litter-free
2. stop high-rise littering of small items like used tissue papers besides big and dangerous items
3. hold on to their wastes e.g. tissue papers, food containers, etc until they reach home or a place where there is a waste bin
4. every smoker carries a small metal container to hold the cigarette ashes and butts
5. when eating or drinking while walking, try to use something to prevent dropping crumbs or spilling the liquid onto the gound
6. unbox empty cartons and compact and put them in the blue recycling bins
7. bring down recyclables to the blue recycling bins instead of leaving them on the levels of the high-rise apartment blocks
8. Wash and dry drink and other recyclable containers before putting them into the blue recycling bins (we should have done this before the silly government introduced the drink container return scheme, which costs unnecessary money and increases the cost of living)
9. the government needs to have real leaders like LKY and his ministers who can convince the people to do all the above things.
PM Lawrence Wong recently told us to show the new arrivals how to embrace our values and our way of life. We need to have good values and good way of life before we attempt to influence others.

I have also given another response to a person who replied to my earlier comment.

KaaGe Liew Yes, it certainly takes time to educate everyone. In case you are unaware, during the 80s and 90s most of the people were able to carry out those social responsibilities. However now, even those seniors are not doing what they need to do. So, it is not just the younger people, but also many seniors need to be re-educated.

Please read the above paragraphs carefully and slowly to get the main points in my messages.

Dear Christine and Hwee Min
I refer to your articles, 'White Paper to offer ways to support marriage, parenthood', in the ST and 'White Paper on fertility and child development in the works as Singapore pushes to reverse birth rate decline' in CNA respectively today, 22 May 2026.

I believe that the measures that the PAP government has taken or will be taking are just tackling the issue at the symptom level, not at the root cause level. What we need is a government which has true leaders who can convince the people of the need to procreate, not just for themselves but for the nation and mankind. The people need to be convinced that they have a duty to propagate mankind and that they should not be thinking of themselves only.

If we have leaders like LKY and his ministers, convincing the people would have been easily done.

Regards
Steven Lee

Today, 22 May 2026, I sent the third email within four days to SMRT and LTA regarding the duplication of bus stops on some bus services presented by SMRT on the website.

We need to show the people how good a job PM Lawrence Wong and his government have done their jobs.

Dear SMRT

Dear SMRT
Again, I see another bus service, 911, which has many duplicate bus stops. Bus stops from 46281 are duplicated. (See the cursor positions on the photos.)

What is going on in SMRT? Are you fit to run the bus and train networks?

To LTA, you are also at fault. Where is your oversight over all matters related to the bus and train networks?

The people are paying millions of dollars to the ministers of MOT. Yet, we are seeing such simple and very bad mistakes.

To PM Lawrence Wong, please justify to the people that we need to pay millions of dollars to the ministers and MPs.

A Facebook post talked about the adverse impact of NS to one's career. Please see my comment on that post.

I am puzzled by those who claim that the two years of NS is a waste of time and that it holds back their career advancement.
As long as one is doing something and bothers to think of the learning points, the time spent is not wasted. Polishing the pair of boots to the required standard is indeed laborous and seems to be a waste of time. However, it teaches one to aim for perfection or excellence and to find ways to do that in the shortest time possible. It also teaches one the consequence of not meeting the objective within a required time period. Are we saying that such learning points are useless in the later part of our life?
If we lag others in skills or knowledge, we should put in double time and effort to catch up and even exceed others. Complaining that the system disadvantage you will only make you want others to make life easier for you, when the fact is that one needs to make things happen positively for oneself.
