🛑:3rd Mundari Cultural Festival set for January 16 in Terekeka

The 3rd Mundari Cultural Festival will be held from January 16–18, 2026, under the theme “Celebrating Mundari Culture to Promote Peaceful Coexistence in South Sudan,” officials announced Friday.

The Ministry of Culture, Museums and National Heritage, through Undersecretary Malok Majak Malok, confirmed the dates and reaffirmed full government support, saying the festival promotes unity, peace and cultural preservation.

Organizing chairperson Bush Buse said all 10 payams of Terekeka will participate, showcasing traditional dances, wrestling, rituals and exhibitions. Thousands of visitors are expected to attend, with activities including poetry, cultural games and peace dialogues.

Terekeka County Commissioner Dr. Emmanuel Loku said the county is ready to host the event, citing improved security and stability.

Organizers say the festival will serve as a platform for youth engagement, cultural pride and national cohesion beyond entertainment.

Poland has warned Russian President Vladimir Putin of possible arrest if he crosses its airspace for a summit with US President Donald Trump in Hungary.

The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant against Putin for allegedly deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine, an accusation the Kremlin denied. This obligates the court’s member states - including Poland - to arrest Putin if he sets foot on its territory.

“I cannot guarantee that an independent Polish court won’t order the government to es**rt such an aircraft down to hand the suspect to the court in The Hague,” Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told Radio Rodzina.

“And, therefore, if this summit is to take place, hopefully with the participation of the victim of the aggression, the aircraft will use a different route.”

Last week, Trump said he aims to hold a summit with Putin in the Hungarian capital Budapest within two weeks in a push to end the war.

Bulgaria signaled it would allow Putin to use its airspace if this could help secure peace in Ukraine, Bulgarian News Agency BTQ quoted Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev as saying.

Any trip to Budapest would require Putin to cross the airspace of other EU countries. All these states are ICC members, but Hungary is in the process of leaving.

The Trump-Putin summit is facing uncertainty. Though Trump had said the summit would take place within weeks, the Kremlin says no date has yet been set.

Donald Trump arrives in Israel to end Israel-Gaza War

US President Donald Trump has declared that “the war is over” as he arrived in Israel for the release of hostages from Gaza under the newly agreed ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump expressed confidence that the truce would hold and announced plans to establish a “Board of Peace” for Gaza, describing the enclave as resembling a “demolition site.”
He commended Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Qatari government for their roles in mediating the ceasefire agreement.

According to the deal, Hamas must release all remaining hostages in Gaza by midday local time (10:00 BST). Later on Monday, President Trump is scheduled to travel to Egypt to attend an international summit focused on solidifying peace efforts and formally ending the war.

The conflict was triggered by the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, which left about 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken hostage. In response, Israel launched a massive military campaign in Gaza, which, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, has killed more than 67,000 Palestinians, including over 18,000 children.

The ceasefire, which came into effect on Friday morning, marks the first phase of a 20-point peace plan brokered by President Trump. The remaining phases will be negotiated in the coming weeks.

Under the agreement, Hamas is expected to release 20 surviving hostages and the remains of up to 28 others. In return, Israel will free approximately 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,700 detainees from Gaza, while significantly increasing humanitarian aid deliveries to the Strip.

An Israeli government spokesperson confirmed that the Palestinian prisoners would be released once all living hostages safely return to Israeli territory.

A new report by the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) warns that the emergence of vigilante and armed youth groups across South Sudan is threatening the ceasefire and efforts to transition from conflict to peace.

The three-month report, covering June to September, links the rise of these groups to increasing communal violence, particularly along major roads, where humanitarian workers and civilians have been targeted. It also documents several cases of civilian abductions for ransom.

CEPO Executive Director Edmund Yakani said the spread of self-styled “community defence forces” poses a growing risk to national stability and undermines the implementation of the peace agreement.

“We have seen the rise of armed youth gang groups across the country, and new armed groups using violence as a livelihood. They call themselves community defence forces,” Yakani said. “We appeal to every South Sudanese to reflect, because the transitional process in South Sudan is losing its purpose.”

The report, titled "South Sudan Transitional Process from Violence to Peace," adds that peace implementation mechanisms remain largely non-functional due to internal divisions within the SPLM-IO, further delaying the country’s progress toward lasting peace.
