🇪🇪 WHY IS EVERYONE SUDDENLY TALKING ABOUT TALLINN FOR A CITY BREAK?
If Tallinn keeps appearing on your radar but you don’t really know much about it, here’s the useful bit.
📍 Tallinn is the capital of Estonia, sitting on the Baltic Sea in Northern Europe, with Finland directly across the water. Helsinki is only around 2 hours away by ferry, so you could even combine the 2 cities.
✈️ Direct flights from the UK take roughly 3 hours, and Tallinn Airport is only around 4 km from the centre. Public transport gets you into the city in around 15 minutes, or it’s a quick taxi ride. That’s a big tick for me when you’ve only got a few days.
🏰 What I really like about Tallinn is the contrast. The UNESCO listed Old Town is all medieval walls, cobbled lanes, church spires, towers and those gorgeous red rooftops.
But venture beyond it and you’ll find something completely different. Kalamaja and Telliskivi bring colourful wooden houses, street art, independent shops and cafés, while Kadriorg gives you parks and grander architecture. Then there’s the Baltic waterfront and some genuinely interesting museums.
🍽️ Estonian food is worth exploring too. Black rye bread is a staple, alongside smoked fish, Baltic herring and hearty meat and potato dishes. Look out for kiluvõileib, an open sandwich traditionally topped with sprats, egg and herbs, and kohuke, a popular little chocolate covered curd snack.
Tallinn also has a great café and restaurant scene, so I’d leave yourself time to actually enjoy it rather than spending the entire break ticking off attractions.
💶 Estonia uses the euro, but I wouldn’t necessarily sell Tallinn as an ultra cheap city break. The Old Town is naturally more tourist focused, while heading beyond the busiest streets gives you a wider choice for eating and drinking.
👟 One thing I would consider is mobility. Tallinn is wonderfully compact, but medieval also means cobbles, slopes and steps, particularly around Toompea. It’s part of the charm, but worth knowing if walking is difficult or you’re travelling with a buggy. Buses and trams make exploring further afield much easier.
🌊 And don’t forget, Tallinn is a coastal city. Explore the waterfront and Seaplane Harbour, or if you have longer, hop across the Baltic to Helsinki.
💛 So who would I recommend Tallinn to?
If you’ve loved Kraków, Prague or Budapest but fancy a European city break that’s a little smaller and perhaps less obvious, I’d seriously consider it.
You’ve got history, beautiful architecture, Baltic coastline, creative neighbourhoods, interesting food and enough to fill a few days without needing a military operation to see everything.
