VAT registration in Thailand is required when starting a business, if the new company is projected to have a turnover that surpasses a certain amount. This tax was introduced in order to replace an older business tax.

Value-added tax is a type of indirect taxation on the value-added of each phase of distribution and production for certain products or services. The value of VAT in Thailand is set at 7%, a reduction applicable until September 2023.

Thai VAT registration for a foreign company

Foreign companies are required to register for VAT purposes when they make taxable supplies in certain cases. Temporary VAT registration is possible for foreign companies.

Non-resident companies carrying out activities in Thailand in a non-temporary fashion (more than a temporary basis) are required to register for VAT purposes.

What companies need to register for VAT in Thailand?
Any individual or organization that supplies goods or services on a regular basis in Thailand with a turnover of more than THB 1.8 million (USD 51,151) per year is subject to VAT in Thailand.

Any individual or organization that is subject to VAT in Thailand has to register to be a VAT-recorded individual or organization. VAT registration in Thailand must be performed:

• prior to the business operation;
• in a maximum of 30 days after its turnover has exceeded THB 1.8 million.

Investment Visa
Foreign investors in Thailand are able to stay, long-term, in the Kingdom. Eligibility for the Investment Visa is based on several criteria. The foreigner is required to:

1. Hold a non-immigrant visa.

2. Transfer at least 10 million baht into Thailand.

And

3. One or a combination of the following, with a value totaling 10 million baht.

✓ Purchase or lease of a or a few condominium projects.

✓ Have a balance in a fixed-deposit account in a majority Thai-owned bank.

✓ Purchase and own Thai government and/or state enterprise bonds.

The investment visa is renewable annually, as long as the investments stipulated above are maintained.

Like with other visas, Investment Visa holders are required to report their addresses every 90 days and may only work in Thailand with a work permit.

An investor’s family members are also eligible for long-term stay in Thailand, as long as they can provide evidence supporting their relationships. Family members who qualify include parents, spouse and children. They may also work in Thailand, provided they have work permits.
