From small bamboo plants to a living fence — 2 years and 8 months later!
Hello, fellow Chiang Mai gardeners! In February 2024, I planted black bamboo (Bambusa lako) and golden bamboo (Schizostachyum brachycladum) to create a colourful living fence. Today, it’s taking shape just as I had imagined.
In my garden, the black bamboo has grown faster than the golden bamboo. During the first year, I trimmed its tops and foliage to keep the two more balanced, although it still produces new shoots more quickly.
Next February, I plan to divide and relocate parts of the clumps that have grown outside my intended fence line.
These bamboos are planted as display examples at Boonthammee Bamboo Garden, so visitors can see how they look growing in the ground. I’m also planning to trial other bamboo varieties for living fences and privacy screens. For now, my priority is making sure there’s enough water for the coming dry season.
Which would you choose for your garden — black bamboo, golden bamboo, or a combination of both?
If you’re exploring bamboo for your own garden in Chiang Mai, feel free to message me. I’m happy to share my experience.
