Moving to Thailand as a family? The paperwork is where most people get stuck.

Here's what to have ready for your family visa:

- Proof of relationship: marriage certificate for a spouse, birth or adoption certificates for children
- Certified translations: notarised, if your documents aren't in Thai or English
Main applicant's documents: passport, visa or stay permit, and work permit if applicable
- Financial evidence: this varies by visa type and embassy, so check yours before you apply

What Just Changed in Thailand

Thailand's visa-free stay has been cut from 60 days to 30. The change took effect on 15 September.

Ryan explains what's changed, who it affects, and your options if you want to stay longer. The short version:
Around 60 countries now get 30 days visa-free, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia
A one-time extension of up to 30 days is possible at immigration, subject to approval
If you entered before 15 September, you keep your original stay
Visa on Arrival is now limited to three nationalities

If you're planning to live here rather than visit, visa-free entry was never the long-term answer.

Thinking about retiring in Thailand? 🇹🇭

Getting the visa sorted is an important part of the move, but it isn’t the only thing worth planning for.

Health insurance
Age limits, pre-existing conditions and the level of coverage available in Thailand can all affect which plans are available to you. Looking into your options early gives you more time to understand what suits your needs.

Your long-term home
Think beyond simply finding somewhere you like. Access to healthcare, transport, local amenities and the kind of day-to-day lifestyle you want can all shape where you choose to settle.

Banking and finances
Living abroad can change how you access and move your money. Consider your day-to-day banking, how you’ll transfer funds to Thailand and how you’ll manage your finances once you’re here.

Travelling outside Thailand
If you’re living in Thailand on a retirement extension, leaving without a re-entry permit can end your existing permission to stay. A re-entry permit allows you to travel and return without losing that permission.

There’s more to retiring in Thailand than the visa. Planning ahead can make settling into life here much smoother.

Meet Teresa, our Head of Local Services 🇹🇭

Whether it’s a driving licence, insurance, accommodation, a border run, or something a little more unusual, Teresa and our Local Services team help clients navigate the practical side of living in Thailand.

But today, we wanted you to get to know the person behind the role.

We asked Teresa about her work, what she enjoys most about helping people settle here, her advice for anyone moving to Thailand, and a little about her life outside of work.

Q: What does your role as Head of Local Services involve?

A: “My role is basically helping make life in Thailand easier for our clients. I manage our Local Services team, work with our partners, and help clients with all the practical things they might need while living, working, or settling here.

A lot of it is problem-solving and finding the right solution for each person.”

Q: What’s something people are often surprised that Solutions Thailand can help with?

A: “Probably how many different things they can actually ask us about! Sometimes a client comes to us for one thing, like a visa, and then realizes we can also help with their driving licence, insurance, finding a place to live, getting around Thailand, or other things they need once they're here.

If we're not sure, we'll usually try to find out rather than just saying no.”

Q: What do you enjoy most about helping people settle into life in Thailand?

A: “I think it’s the human side of it. Moving to another country can be exciting, but it can also be confusing when you don’t know how things work or who to ask.

I like being that person who can make things a little easier. It feels good when someone comes to us stressed about something and leaves feeling like, ‘Okay, I’ve got this.’”

Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give someone moving to Thailand?

A: “Don’t expect everything to work exactly the way it does back home! Be patient, stay open-minded, ask questions, and give yourself time to understand how things work here.

Thailand is an amazing place to live when you learn to go with the flow a little.”

Q: Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?

A: “I’m quite a creative person. I love painting, writing poetry, making art, travelling, and spending time in nature. I also really enjoy learning about psychology, spirituality, people, and understanding why we are the way we are. Recently, I’ve been getting more into filmmaking and storytelling too.

I also love volunteering and helping children in different communities. Helping others and sharing a little love wherever I can is something that means a lot to me.

And a fun fact about me: I always carry notebooks of different sizes in my bag, because whenever a new idea comes to me, I need somewhere to write it down. 😊”

From 31 August 2026, new requirements for DTV applications will take effect worldwide.

There are two key changes:

1. You must apply from a country where you are a national or permanent resident.
You’ll need to provide evidence of this when you submit your application.

2. A criminal record clearance certificate is now required.
The certificate can be issued by the relevant authorities in either your country of nationality or the country where you submit your application.

It’s important to note that these changes apply specifically to the DTV. Other Thai visa categories are not affected by these new DTV requirements.

The new DTV requirements apply worldwide, across all nationalities and Thai embassies and consulates.

Supporting document requirements may vary between embassies and consulates, so always check the requirements of the Thai mission where you plan to submit your application.

If you’re planning to apply for the DTV and aren’t sure how these changes affect you, send us a message or book a free consultation and we can talk you through your options.
