Turkey: Experienced Host Country of International Events

Turkey is highly esteemed by sports world for successfully organizing 2002 European Basketball Championship for Men, 2005 UEFA Champions League Final, Istanbul Formula 1 Grand Prix which is included in the Formula 1 schedule and organized regularly, 2008 World Billiard Championship for Women, European Basketball Championship for Junior Women, World Wrestling Championship for Junior Women and 2009 UEFA Final.

As a result of these successes, Turkey was given the honor of hosting fourteen European and World Championships until 2012. These events include, but are not limited to, 2009 European Volleyball Championship for Men, 2010 World Basketball Championship, 2011 European Youth Games, 2011-2013 World Tennis Championship, 2012 World Amateur Team Golf Championship, and 2012 World Indoor Athletics Championship. In addition, Turkey is among the leading countries as a candidate for 33 European and World Championships until 2014.

Along with successes gained in almost all sports, Turkey made an increasing progress in golf sport during the previous year. 2005 European Champion Clubs' Cup, regularly organized International Turkish Open Golf Championship from 2002 on, Faldo Series tournaments organized for the first time in Antalya in 2008 and also 2008 Istanbul European Champion Clubs' Cup were successfully organized by the Turkish Golf Federation.

Turkey will host 2012 World Amateur Team Championships in the best possible way with its experience in organizing international events, internationally renowned hospitality, unique natural and cultural wealth, excellent accommodation facilities and four well-designed golf courses on which the championship will take place.

Antalya: "Paradise on earth"

According to the legend, King Attalos II of Pergamon who sought a place to build a new city asked his soldiers to find the "paradise on earth". The soldiers sought for the paradise for a long time, then they finally decided that the place where Antalya is located today could be the "paradise on earth". That is why Attalos II built the city there and named it "Attaleia".

Antalya is indeed the most popular paradise in Turkey, which is covered with historical, cultural and natural treasures all over, and it is called Turkish Riviera.

As told in the legend, the city was built by King Attalos II of Pergamon between 138 and 159 BC. The region, being one of the most important areas of settlement in the Mediterranean, was called "Pamphylia" in ancient times. The historical and cultural value of the city was inherited from the Hittite, Lydian, Persia, Ion, Macedonian and Roman civilizations built in this region which has been famous for its unique geographical assets through centuries. Patara, Olympus, Phaselis, Myra, Termessos, Limyra and Side antique cities are the leading cultural assets of the city.
