Great news for Istanbul residents and visitors!
The first section of the M11 metro line has officially opened, connecting the city center with the new Istanbul IST İGA Airport.
The M11 line, also known as the Gayrettepe-İstanbul Havalimanı-Halkalı Metro Hattı, has two branches, one heading towards Halkalı and the other towards Gayrettepe.
While the first branch is still under construction, the inauguration has taken place on the second branch towards Gayrettepe.
Free to use for one month, the currently active line runs from the airport only until the Kağıthane station, taking 24 minutes and with a daily capacity of 800,000 passengers.
In the coming months (presumably April 2023), the final section to Gayrettepe will also be made operational and from there, passengers will be able to transfer to other lines and reach their final destination in the city, particularly with the M2 line towards Taksim.
With a total budget of 999.8 million euros and a maximum speed of 120km/h, the M11 will be the fastest metro in Europe. It is estimated that the M11 will carry around 94 million passengers per year.
