Only accessible by boat, Kelebek Vadisi (Butterfly Valley), close to Fethiye, feels like a south-east Asian paradise beach. It has remained undeveloped, with just a few wooden buildings and a campsite dotting the lush valley. The stunning walk to a waterfall and the gorgeous beach make a popular day trip from Fethiye for TL10 (£2.50) return, but if you want to escape the crowds and totally switch off, this is your place. Camping and basic huts with restaurant and bar available on the beach.

Located 8 km from Ephesus, the Meryemana is a major tourist attraction and has a curious history. Tradition holds that the Virgin Mary journeyed to Ephesus with St John, and is said to have died here. The main building dates from the Byzantine era (6th century) but its association with the Virgin only began in the 19th century following the visions of the German nun, Katharina Emmerich who gave a precise description of the situation and appearance of a house at Ephesus in which she claimed the Virgin had lived and died. In 1891, on the basis of this account, a French priest discovered the ruins of a small church which had evidently belonged to a monastery and this is now revered as the Virgin's house. The chapel here is tiny and be aware that the site gets very crowded with tour bus groups. There is a small wishing well on site where it is customary to tie a piece of cloth and make a wish.

These white, snow like, pools of water look like they’re something out of a winter wonderland. Well in fact, they’re the “cotton castle” mineral baths of Pamukkale and are a great day trip from Bodrum

The Bronze Age Shipwrecks exhibit displays interesting findings recovered from sunken trading vessels discovered by local sponge divers. The artefacts, from the 13th and 16th century BCE, are indispensable for understanding the late Bronze Age. Also on display is the world’s oldest known shipwreck, also one of the richest finds, discovered at Uluburun in 1982.
