Economy
Bulgaria, located in the centre of Southeast Europe, is the country through which important roads connect Europe to the Middle East and Asia. Owing to the country’s strategic position it offers the following market advantages:
• Southeast Europe; a fast developing market with 122 million consumers;
• Bulgaria; provides duty-free access to the European Union market with 500 million consumers and at the same time, it is the country within the European Union that has the lowest business and living expenses;
• Bulgaria is a member of the European Union, NATO and the World Trade Organisation;
Some laws applicable to investors in Bulgaria are as follows:
• General Corporation Tax is 10%. In regions in Bulgaria where the unemployment rate is high, this percentage is 0%;
• Income tax is 10%;
• 5% tax is deducted from dividends;
• A two-year VAT exemption is applicable for imported machinery and equipment for investment
projects of over 5 million Euro providing employment for at least 50 people;
• The depreciation rates on computers and new production equipment are cancelled out within
two years;
• The possibility for offsetting research and development expenses is offered;
• Stoppage tax at the rate of 5% is applied to dividend and liquidation shares (0% for European
Union-established companies);
• Profit tax at the rate of 0% is applied to investments in 152 districts (from a total of 264
districts) in which the unemployment rate is high;
• High depreciation rates (over 50%) on investments in new machinery, production equipment,
computers, software and peripheral equipment;
• The possibility for benefitting from tax credit according to the special procedures and principles
applicable to the accrual of VAT on imports for realising investment projects of over 10 million Bulgarian Lev,
• In the event young people and disabled people are employed with the mediation of the Employment Agency, the possibility is provided for meeting the minimum wages and social and health insurance premiums for up to one year.
Incentives in Accordance with the Investment Incentive Act
• Reduced periods regarding the provision of information services and administrative services • Provision of individual administrative services
• Provision of financial support for training aimed at providing the relevant people with
professional proficiency for the purpose of meeting the requirements of the investment project
• Provision of financial support for establishing infrastructural elements within the bounds of the
investment project
• Provision of financial support in meeting a portion of the premiums paid by the investor for the
social security for newly employed workers
