--------------------------------------------------------------------The Mandala House is a concept project of what a house could be and perhaps what it should be. After experimenting with natural building designs at Reflections Camp in Kabak Valley, I realized I wanted to build something with a design style that mainstream building didn't offer in Turkey. A layout that curved along with the land, something so pleasing to the eye yet strong, functional and ecologically sound, that it would be inspiring. So what we've done is incorporate several considerations into our endeavour: Aesthetically, we've used nature as design and emphasized spatial considerations. Ecologically and sustainably, we've made use of both mainstream building materials as well as natural building materials to emphasize thermal insulation. As well we've installed a 20kw solar electric system (+ a 15kw generator as backup on cloudy, short rainy days) to address all our energy needs and we have the ability to harvest over 100 tons of rainwater per year. On top of that, instead of using wood from trees that have been cut down, most of the wood we've used has been harvested from bushes in the forest that have already regenerated within the first year. Most importantly, we have built a house that is strong and as long lasting as it is beautiful. Design wise The Mandala House Project exudes thoughtful consideration of both the surrounding nature and spiritual nature inherent to all of us. Both the main house and the guest house are circular in shape with amazing Japanese inspired reciprocal roofs. The main house is conceived with a yin yang floor plan that subtly compliments the concept of infinity of the reciprocal roof. An open loft and 4.5 meter walls that soar to 6 meters at the apex create a sense of space not easily found in typical homes. Because of legal requirements the main house of the project is built using a concrete frame and foundation. In order to offset the huge amount of carbon output of concrete we insulated the house up to four times more efficiently than the typical home. Finally, as a demonstration of how a home can be built with 100% natural materials our guest house will be built using only straw, stone and wood. Besides the two main structures, an elliptical swimming pool, outdoor fire pit, a Chinese inspired entrance topped off by stunning landscape design all combine to make The Mandala House Project a concept beyond the extraordinary. In building the Mandala House Project we've set out to build something unique, yet enduring; A well built structure with attention to the nature that surrounds us as well as the beauty and spirituality of that nature.

Disembarking Motorcycles off the Coast of Colombia in the Caribbean Sea Cristo Rey, Colombian Caribbean Coast, December, 1994 In the distance, apparently, is a tiny village hidden behind a thin layer of tropical foliage. Underneath a sulking and brooding sky the sandy shoreline fronting the jungle is being battered by waves rolling unimpeded across the Caribbean Sea. There is no pier though, no dock for this rocking boat I am on to safely dock and unload all its wares; a mountain of microwave ovens, alcohol and all sorts of other appliances all wrapped beneath waterproof tarps, secured with ropes....

International Rainbow Gathering on the Eynif Plateau, Turkey, 2022 A few weeks before the full moon of October, 2022, I found out that a friend of mine, Tamahin, and her children were going to attend the International Rainbow Festival on the Eynif Plateau an hour and a half outside of Antalya. I’d had a long time acquaintance with the ‘Rainbow Tribe’ because of my camping place I used to own and run in Kabak Valley and while not being particularly open to the ideals of Rainbow so many years ago, I was now in the mood to explore it further....
