Sharing a bit more of our local history!

Did You Know? One of Tobago’s historic estates has a story dating back more than 260 years.

Long before Courland Estate became the peaceful community many know today, this area was part of Tobago’s colonial plantation landscape, with historical records connecting the estate to the early British period following Britain’s acquisition of Tobago in 1763.

In 1765, the Courland Bay area was among the first recorded land parcels sold during the British administration of Tobago, with James Simpson listed as the purchaser of the original Courland property.

The name “Courland” carries an even older story. In the 17th century, the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia, a Baltic state located in present-day Latvia, attempted to establish settlements in Tobago. Although those settlements were short-lived, their legacy remains through names such as Courland Bay and the Courland Monument near Plymouth.

Today, Courland Estate stands as a reminder of Tobago’s layered history, shaped by Indigenous heritage, European settlements, colonial plantations, and the communities that continue to grow across the island.
