Rooms.Taipei: Co-living & Serviced Apartments in Taipei

Rooms.Taipei: Co-living & Serviced Apartments in Taipei Coliving spaces for young foreigners in Taipei. When we met in Taipei, we decided to do it right for others.

We are a small team of foreigners and locals that spent the past decade living in countless short term houses around the world. We’ve made ALL the mistakes in the book, and each of our apartments is designed to avoid you this. We chase the best places in Taipei and put them up to international standards, we add our own design twists, and rent them out on a short term basis. The only question we ha

ve in mind when we visit a place, or design it is "Would I want to live there?"
We give you the place, the toys, and the right people to have a great time together. More practical details about our places can be found here: www.rooms.taipei

Great question on a facebook group today: How do you safely rent a room in Taipei from abroad? Do you sign sight unseen? Do you wait until you came to Taipei?

Our answer:
This is a great question and honestly a tricky situation.
We have heard of scams in FB groups lately: This year, one woman allegedly took deposits from 28 foreign students after she lost access to the flats she was renting, just by keeping the ads up.
If you're renting from abroad, it's much safer to go through established companies with proper websites and Google rankings. Some run their own spaces (so they can vouch for quality), while others are just agents (they can confirm it’s not a scam, but not the room quality). Always ask which type they are.
If you do go through FB groups, ask for:
– A copy of the landlord’s ID
– Written proof they're allowed to rent the place
– A video call from inside the flat
Not every landlord want to bother doing this, so you may face rejection, unfortunately. Also, most of them do not accept simple reservations and will most likely ask you to pay a large non-refundable reservation fee, since they are in a similar pickle as you are and want to be sure you are not wasting their time.
If you wait until arriving in Taipei, there is a big chance you will not find a room, and end up staying in a hostel. This is especially true in fall where the demand far outstrip the availability.
Good luck!

Crossroads 社團法人台灣全球連結發展協會 is formally opening their campaign to push for the reform of the dual citizenship status for foreigners. This means that, just like Taiwanese citizens can become citizens of other countries and hold multiple passports, foreigners becoming Taiwanese would be able to keep their home country citizenship.
The association successfully pushed for the reform of the status of handicapped foreigners last year, meaningfully changing the lives of many.
This new campaign has the ability to meaningfully change the lives of many more people, and the association really needs your support.

Crossroads is proud to be collaborating with CommonWealth Magazine 天下雜誌 , 歐洲在臺商務協會 European Chamber of Commerce Taiwan - ECCT, The Community Services Center - Taipei, All Hands Taiwan, Forward Taiwan 。 向前台灣, Ripplemaker Foundation 漣漪人基金會, Taiwan Impact Entrepreneurs - TIE, Red Room Rendezvous 紅房餐酒館, and Enspyre 安石國際 in organizing the event, "Immigration and Taiwan's Future: A Discussion About What It Means to Be Taiwanese Today" on Thursday, August 22 from 7PM -9 PM at National Taiwan Normal University.

There, we will formally launch the Dual Nationality Taiwan campaign -an advocacy plan calling for legislative reform that allows permanent residents (APRC holders) a pathway to citizenship without having to renounce their original citizenship(s).

You may check out our full program itinerary and register for free using the event page on Accupass in the link in the comments section. The event will be in English and Chinese. If you are unable to attend in person, there will be an option to register for access to the livestream feed.

For the many of you who care about this issue, please be sure to come support by adding your voice. We hope to see you there. Thank you.

Rooms.Taipei was started after our founder landed in a wheelchair following an accident, and his landlord tried to take advantage of the situation to double his rent. The issue of disability is thus quite dear to us.

This is why it is very important for us to congratulate David Chang from the non-profit Crossroads 社團法人台灣全球連結發展協會 for his work with Legislator Claire Wang 王婉諭 and the 衛生福利部 Ministry of Health and Welfare (MoHW) to open up disability certification for foreigners.

The certification is still limited at the moment as it is on the basis of reciprocity, but it is still a huge improvement and more countries will be added to the list in the coming months. This is proof that if foreigners organise they can change their situation in Taiwan.

Congratulations to David and Crossroads for their achievement in advancing our rights in this country!

"Foreigners are not welcome"
Sadly, this is something we often get to see or hear in Taiwan. About 1/4 of the phone calls we give to landlords/agents to discuss taking over one of their places ends up with a "Sorry, no foreigner".
It is however the first time we have seen this written on a rental website with an English version. It's actually against the law (Immigration Act, Article 62 "Any person shall not discriminate against people residing in the Taiwan Area on the basis of nationality, race, color, class and place of birth.").
The sad reality is that the enforcement of this particular law is very lax.
We think this is completely wrong and we rent to everyone regardless of origins. In fact, our Zhongxing house (www.rooms.taipei/zx) currently has 6 nationalities for 7 rooms. We are glad to count Africans, Southeast Asians, Indians, and South Americans among our past and existing tenants & teammates.

Today the Ministry of Education announced that they are doubling down on their successful policy of attracting international students to the country. The new target is to bring in 320,000 students by 2030, a significant increase from the previous goal of 150,000 by 2020, with a particular focus on increasing the number of students from Southeast Asia.
A large part of our focus at Rooms Taipei has been to help new students to adapt to life in Taipei as quickly as possible as they often do not plan on staying in Taiwan as long as young professionals and need more help. Another focus has been to create an environment that can adapt to very different cultures. Our Zhongxing house regularly has more than 5 different citizenships for 7 rooms.
Sounds like we have a lot more work ahead!

Taipei, Sept. 7 (CNA) The Cabinet on Thursday approved a plan for the Ministry of Education (MOE) to set up 10 overseas offices, many in Southeast Asian countries, and launch a host of new degree programs with the goal of attracting and retaining thousands of international students in Taiwan by 2030...

Increasingly coliving is becoming big business in Western countries (and in China, it's already huge). Taipei is still lacking far behind most cities, with the largest operator having under 100 units. It's time to grow!

Habyt is an easy way to find a fully furnished, private room or apartment in Berlin, Madrid, Barcelona, Milan and Lisbon. All costs are included in the rent, no surprises.

Our Story

We are a small team of foreigners and locals that spent the past decades moving cities to cities and living in countless houses around the world. When we met in Taipei, we decided to do it right for others. We are mad about discovery and digging deeper to buy you a second life, or a third, 0r a fourth. In our many years living abroad, we have made most of the stupid mistakes in the book, and we bring you a place, a community, and the tools to discover Taiwan the way you should. Practically speaking, this means clean and maintained places near the MRT, where we keep a certain standard of living among people, the place, and the neighbours. It means guidance on how to use your AC, your washing machine, how to go to the Airport, or where to eat in your neighbourhood. It means a member card that gets you in clubs for free or gets you special deals at festivals, where you can sleep with the tent and hammock we got for you. It means going out with your housemates to a barbecue at a waterfall one month, a boat trip to the last active volcano island another month, or a semester trip down south like the insane and wonderful birthday of the goddess of the sea, Mazu. For an actual room, head to www.rooms.taipei/our-rooms To see what our services include check www.rooms.taipei/our-service To see some of the photos of the events we organise, head to www.facebook.com/rooms.taipei/photos (apologies, we are better at discovery than photos). And heck, why not show you the 500+ photos we took at the last Birthday of Mazu: https://tinyurl.com/RTMazu2019
