Great question on a facebook group today: How do you safely rent a room in Taipei from abroad? Do you sign sight unseen? Do you wait until you came to Taipei?
Our answer:
This is a great question and honestly a tricky situation.
We have heard of scams in FB groups lately: This year, one woman allegedly took deposits from 28 foreign students after she lost access to the flats she was renting, just by keeping the ads up.
If you're renting from abroad, it's much safer to go through established companies with proper websites and Google rankings. Some run their own spaces (so they can vouch for quality), while others are just agents (they can confirm it’s not a scam, but not the room quality). Always ask which type they are.
If you do go through FB groups, ask for:
– A copy of the landlord’s ID
– Written proof they're allowed to rent the place
– A video call from inside the flat
Not every landlord want to bother doing this, so you may face rejection, unfortunately. Also, most of them do not accept simple reservations and will most likely ask you to pay a large non-refundable reservation fee, since they are in a similar pickle as you are and want to be sure you are not wasting their time.
If you wait until arriving in Taipei, there is a big chance you will not find a room, and end up staying in a hostel. This is especially true in fall where the demand far outstrip the availability.
Good luck!
