Following in the footsteps of Dizdar, younger Bosnian Herzegovinian artists have recently begun to explore stećci and incorporate them into their works. Sculptor Adis Elias Fejzić interprets the nation's present and the future by looking at its past. "I don't know what the creators of ancient stećci saw in their stones and wanted from them, but I know what I see in them. Among the best-preserved and most valuable of these World Heritage sites is Radimlja. The site's most famous symbol – as well as the first image that comes to mind for most Bosnians and Herzegovinans when they think of stećci – is a depiction of a male figure etched on one of the necropolis' tombstones, raising his right hand while his left clutches a bow and arrow. Some anthropologists think it could represent a gesture of prayer to the Sun or Moon.

To reach Ennedi, Bonomo and I drove through savannah with desert roses, yellow grasses and acacia trees gleaming gold. We passed nomadic Wodaabe and Oulad-Rachid people on the move. Women and children rode up on camels, seated inside colourful chariots decorated with vivid fabrics, carved calabashes and rows of bronze bowls. Men walked alongside, leather amulets strapped across their chests like small suitcases to protect them from evil. Then the tarmac road stopped, the land emptied of trees and entering Ennedi was like stepping through a portal into a place between worlds.

As part of this, a number of dedicated gallery spaces have sprung up in recent years, displaying works that show how Cambodia's troubled history has informed today's creative spirit. They include Tep Kao Sol, a gallery owned by Loeum Lorn (best known for his photographs of melting ice that represent the bitterly cold nights he experienced as a child refugee on the Thai-Cambodian border); and Romcheik5 Art Space, which showcases contemporary pieces by its four founders, alongside works by other Battambang-born artists, including Touch Khchao.
