Ms Stacey said the recent activity might help the trust to find money for accommodation upgrades it wants to make so that visitors can stay in winter "when the night sky is at its best".

But Prof Morgan, head of solar physics at Aberystwyth University, warned the northern lights will remain a rarity in Wales because of its latitude.

Paula Ware, from MAP Archaeological Practice, said the bronze shield was found in a huge grave which contained the skeleton of a man who had been "very revered" and had probably lived between between 220 - 300 BC.

Ms Ware said the man, who was buried with two ponies and a chariot, had been laid on the shield as part of an elaborate Iron Age ritual.

Space is a vital part of our everyday lives. We depend on satellites for weather forecasts, communications, bank transactions, not to mention valuable surveillance tools for nation states. And it's getting busy out there. In 2021 about 5,000 satellites were launched. Going back 20 years, about 800 were launched annually.

Towards the end of the Iron Age, new ingredients like olives and coriander began to be imported, the team said.

Archaeologists believe analysing the grains could highlight how diets changed.

They also hope the pottery will give an insight into trading or gift exchanges across the Channel.

The US space agency's Orion capsule has reached a key milestone on its demonstration mission around the Moon.

On Monday, it moved some 430,000km (270,000 miles) beyond the Earth - the furthest any spacecraft designed to carry humans has travelled.

The ship is uncrewed on this occasion, but if it completes the current flight without incident, astronauts will be on the next outing in two years' time.

Nasa is planning a series of ever more complex missions with Orion.

Some of the jewellery had surfaced before; Douglas Latchford included five items from the collection in a book titled Khmer Gold that he co-wrote with his collaborator, Emma Bunker, in 2008. Khmer antiquities expert Ashley Thompson describes this book and two others as elaborate sales brochures, giving private collectors a taste of what was being sold illegally behind the scenes.

"Publishing these materials, inviting other scholars to contribute and comparing the items to museum pieces was a way of validating them and associating them with known materials already in museums and effectively enhancing their value," she explained.

The first breakthrough in the quest to establish the Red Lady's true identity came in 1912, when archaeologist William Solace revisited Goat's Cave in Paviland where "she" had been discovered and found flint arrow heads and tools.

Solace concluded, correctly, that he, in fact, had been a hunter-gatherer or warrior during what is commonly known as the last Ice Age, though over the last 100 years his date has been pushed back from the Mesolithic period (4-10,000 BCE) to the Palaeolithic era (35,000/10,000 BCE).

And under the Paris Climate Accord, countries must compile CO2 inventories. The GHGSat data could help with international comparisons.

"We'll see how we get on but we do have the aspiration of launching several more carbon dioxide satellites," Dr Germain said.

"Ultimately, we'd like to get to at least monthly coverage of every major CO2 source in the world, and potentially even a weekly coverage of every source in the world."

The latest find of the Oldowan tools show that they were a significant upgrade in sophistication compared to earlier crude stone tools dated to as early as 3.3 million years old, before the emergence of the Homo genus, researchers said.

Other hominins existing at the time included the genus Australopithecus, known for the famous even-older fossil "Lucy" which was found in 1974 in northern Ethiopia.

In Alderney the wildlife trust will hold a Winter-Walkover across Platte Saline towards Hannaine Bay, involving a beach clean and the mapping of invasive species, with discussions on climate change.

The Ramsar site is home to "internationally important populations of seabirds", a seal colony and a "highly diverse marine ecosystem," a spokesperson for the trust said.

The theme for World Wetlands Day 2023 is "It's Time for Wetlands Restoration", stressing the importance of not just protecting, but also restoring wetland habitat.

Capt Chandi said she had not yet thought about whether she would attempt the crossing again.

She added she was looking forward to having time to recover.

Capt Chandi, a physiotherapist at a regional rehabilitation unit in Buckinghamshire, has also become the first woman to have skied solo to the South Pole twice.

The previous longest unsupported solo female distance record was 858 miles (1,381km), completed by Anja Blacha in 2020.

It comes after a flurry of footage has emerged of whales and dolphins around the Cornish coast.

Katie Bellman from Cornwall Wildlife Trust said the whales spotted off Cornwall recently could be just a fraction of what was in the ocean.

She said regular annual sightings could be a sign of population increase.
