Interesting facts about pikes
Interesting facts about pikes
Fact 1. Large pikes prey not only on fish, amphibians and reptiles, but in general on everyone they are able to overcome. Their victims are often waterfowl or careless rodents who decide to swim across the river. Cases of attacks on a person, they say, also happened, but among them there are no reliably confirmed ones.

Fact 2. These fish grow very quickly, but only during the first year of life, during which they can reach up to 50-70 cm in length. After that, their growth rate rarely slows down, and they begin to grow by 2-3 cm annually. So a large pike one and a half to two meters long is a real river veteran who has lived a very long life.

Fact 3. In addition to the main teeth in the mouth, pikes have small brush teeth that resemble hooks and are directed inward, towards the pharynx. They allow them to more effectively swallow prey. These teeth cover the tongue, palate and even the inner surface of the pike cheeks. And the main fangs of these fish gradually wear down, but new ones grow in their place, like in crocodiles, and they grow all their lives.

Fact 4. Pikes are found on only two continents, in Eurasia and North America. There are 7 different species of them, and in all the waters where they are found, they are at the very top of the food chain. In some places, they even try to fight them, since over-bred pikes cause significant damage to the population of other fish, including valuable commercial species.

Fact 5. All pikes, on occasion, do not disdain cannibalism. Not experiencing any warm feelings for their own relatives, they sometimes fight when they meet, and the winner eats the vanquished. Young pike often get to lunch with old large individuals.

Fact 6. These river predators are able to overcome fairly large prey. As observations of pikes in the wild have shown, they always attack only an enemy that is not able to offer serious resistance, but at the same time, the victims of this fish often reach half of its own size and weight.

Fact 7. Pikes are not able to live either in warm water or in salt water. Therefore, they are found only in fairly cool rivers, lakes and large ponds, although sometimes they swim in the sea. But only in those places where large rivers desalinate sections of the sea enough for freshwater fish to exist there.

Fact 8. Pike meat is considered a dietary percentage, since its fat content usually does not exceed 1-2, sometimes 3 percent. But with pike caviar, you need to be more careful - it can be poisonous when fresh! Moreover, the degree of toxicity depends on the diet of the pike itself, which, in turn, is directly related to the conditions of its habitat. But in salted form, pike caviar is not only edible, but also tasty.

Fact 9. These fish prefer not to expend energy on chases that may not be successful. Pikes attack only from an ambush, trying to grab prey with a swift jerk. If they are not lucky, and the potential victim flees, the river predator usually does not pursue it, but looks for a new place for an ambush.

Fact 10. The largest pike, old and seasoned, can grow up to about 200 cm in length, while reaching a mass of 25-30 kg. But such giants are very rare, since this fish reaches such sizes only at the age of 20-25 years. Moreover, no one knows exactly how long pikes live - some sources say that up to 30-35 years, while others - that more than 100.

Interesting Chipmunk Facts
Interesting Chipmunk Facts
Fact 1. In nature, chipmunks always equip branched burrows, the total length of passages in which can exceed 2.5-3 meters. Order always reigns in their housing - these rodents separately allocate “rooms” for the toilet, food storage and bedroom, and regularly maintain cleanliness. Their burrows are often ruined by bears, who are interested in stocks of nuts and other supplies, so these animals often equip not one shelter, but 2-3 at once, and store food in each. Just in case.

Fact 2. These cute relatives of squirrels will fight like Scandinavian berserkers if someone dares to encroach on their supplies. In case of danger, they prefer to run away, but not if the enemy threatens their home. In this case, the little chipmunk will not retreat before any predator, no matter how large it may be, and will rather die in battle than surrender. These animals also fight among themselves - leading a solitary lifestyle, they meet only in the mating season, and at other times they jealously protect their territory from competitors.

Fact 3. For the winter, chipmunks hibernate, waking up from time to time to eat. They wake up in the spring when it gets warm. But, if suddenly after the thaw the cold reigns again, they can fall asleep again for weeks or even months, if necessary. Thanks to this feature and their thriftiness, these small rodents are able to survive in almost any conditions. They are found even in the subarctic climate zone.

Fact 4. Of the 25 species of chipmunks that exist in the world, only one is found on our mainland, and it is widespread in Siberia. The remaining 24 species are found only in North America. All of them are more or less similar to each other, they lead a similar lifestyle and have the same habits.

Fact 5. Chipmunk diet is very diverse. Contrary to popular belief, they eat not only nuts with berries - on occasion they are ready to gobble up everything that comes across to them, and it does not matter if it is alive or not. Chipmunks willingly eat insects, worms, larvae and other small animals, mostly various small invertebrates. But they make stocks from long-stored food, mostly nuts.

Fact 6. These animals are very clean, and they always keep themselves clean. At the same time, they cannot stand water, and they are completely afraid of rain. They always feel its approach in advance, and start screaming loudly, making sounds like “breaker-bu-ru-run” or something like that. It is thanks to this behavior that their name arose, “chipmunk”, which was formed from the Tatar “boryndyk”.

Fact 7. In harsh climatic conditions, hibernation in chipmunks can last up to 5-6 months. In such cases, they fall into a state close to suspended animation, taking only 2-4 breaths per minute. The temperature of the chipmunk body also drops, amounting to about 5-7 C °. At the same time, a chipmunk of the same species living at home will not hibernate, since it always has enough food, and the harsh winter does not bother it.

Fact 8. These rodents willingly feed on grain, and they extract ripe grains directly from the ears in a very original way. Climbing up the stem, they make its top bend down to the ground, after which they pull out the seeds and put them in their mouths. Cheek pouches of chipmunks can hold a huge amount of food - more than a dozen hazelnuts or a whole handful of grains.

Fact 9. For reasons unknown to zoologists, chipmunks, like some other animals, love to steal shiny objects and drag them into their hole. There is even an opinion that they arrange an “exchange” with people, because in place of a small object stolen by them, you can often find a nut, a twig or other trifle. In fact, this is not an exchange - just an animal, having seen something shiny, throws what it is carrying at the current moment, and grabs the object of more interest to it.

Fact 10. Without exception, all types of chipmunks are similar to each other, and males at first glance are no different from females. All of them have five pronounced stripes on their backs, thanks to which these animals are easy to distinguish from any other rodents.

Interesting Cheetah Facts
Interesting Cheetah Facts
Fact 1. It is cheetahs that are the fastest land animals on Earth, they are able to run at speeds up to 130 km/h! At the same time, to achieve this speed, they need only about 3 seconds, that is, they are able to keep up with supercars with engines with a capacity of one and a half to two thousand horsepower.

Fact 2. Cheetahs can maintain their maximum running speed for no more than 15-20 seconds, since their lungs cannot provide their muscles with enough oxygen. In addition, during these seconds, the cheetah's body produces a huge amount of heat, and if this graceful predator does not stop, he will simply lose consciousness from heat stroke. Every second attack ends with success, but, regardless of its results, the predator after the race needs a rest of 20-30 minutes.

Fact 3. Of all the big cats found in Africa, cheetahs are the weakest. Lions, for example, always try to kill them when they meet in order to get rid of competitors in their hunting grounds. And also hyenas and other predators often take prey from cheetahs, taking advantage of the fact that they are exhausted after their swift dash, and therefore cannot fight back.

Fact 4. The number of cheetahs in the wild is constantly declining, mainly due to the fact that people are pushing them out of their usual habitats. The problem is that these predators almost never breed in captivity, so attempts to keep them in zoos are unlikely to be successful.

Fact 5. Thousands of years ago, cheetahs practically became extinct, and all individuals living today are descendants of a small group of them that somehow survived. Because of this, they suffer from genetic degeneration, and, accordingly, from numerous health problems. It is for this reason that about 50% of their kittens die before they reach one year of age.

Fact 6. During the race at maximum speed, cheetahs make longer jumps than any other living creature on Earth, up to 8 meters in length, and they spend only a fraction of a second on each of them. At the same time, their respiratory rate at this time increases to 150 breaths and exhalations per minute, then 2.5 times per second.

Fact 7. There are only about 6,700 cheetahs left in the world today. Previously, they were found in almost all countries of Africa, in many states of the Middle East and Asia, this was before. By the 21st century, the populations of these animals in most countries of the world were completely destroyed.

Fact 8. Occasionally there are cheetahs with black stripes along the back, and they are called royal. Previously, it was thought that this is a hybrid offspring of cheetahs and servals, but then studies have shown that this is simply a consequence of a mutation.

Fact 9. Approximately 800-1000 years ago, cheetahs were widely used in many countries of the East as hunting animals. They were fabulously expensive, since they do not breed in captivity, and, therefore, the cub was caught in the wild for further training.

Fact 10. Cheetahs only eat prey that they have killed themselves. They will not eat up the leftovers of someone else's meal, even if they have not yet had time to spoil. Moreover, they usually re-hunt every time they want to eat, and do not finish what is left of their previous prey, as most other predators do.

Interesting facts about the animals of the Black Sea
Interesting facts about the animals of the Black Sea
Fact 1. The number of animal species in the Black Sea is relatively small, the local fauna has about 2500 species, which is significantly less than in most other warm seas. This is due to the fact that the Black Sea waters are literally saturated with hydrogen sulfide, which is poisonous in high concentrations. The deeper into the sea, the more it is, so here life exists only in the upper layers of the water, at a depth of up to 200-250 meters.

Fact 2. There are indeed dangerous animals in the Black Sea. There are even sharks here! True, they just do not pose a significant threat. They are called katrans, and they rarely attack people, besides, they are small in size. But to protect them from other predators, nature gave them spikes covered with poisonous mucus, and if such a fish is stepped on, the consequences will be serious.

Fact 3. The most highly organized animals of the Black Sea are dolphins. There are two types of them, however, due to poor ecology, they are becoming less and less. The Black Sea waters are constantly surfed by hundreds and thousands of ships, which by no means contribute to the improvement of the environment, and among all the seas of Russia, the Black Sea is recognized as the most polluted.

Fact 4. Sometimes introduced species take root in new conditions so well that they begin to displace the former inhabitants. Once upon a time, ships brought here from the Far East, from the Sea of Japan or the Yellow Sea, predatory mollusks of rapan, which bred so much that they won a whole niche from the local fauna.

Fact 5. The sea dragon, also known as the sea scorpion, is simply a fish common in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. It looks harmless enough, and does not exceed 30-40 cm in length. But of all the sea animals in Europe, sea dragons are the most dangerous, and all thanks to their poisonous spikes, the injection of which is very painful and even dangerous for humans.

Fact 6. Predatory stingrays are also found in the Black Sea. They hunt prey, attacking it with their powerful tail with a poisonous sting at the end, and such a blow also poses a threat to humans. By themselves, local stingrays are not aggressive, but they live mainly in shallow water, and meeting them when swimming cannot be ruled out.

Fact 7. White-bellied seals are one of the largest animals of the Black Sea, but now they have practically disappeared here. Already in the last century, their population has declined significantly, and now zoologists know only two small herds that have set up rookeries on the coast of Bulgaria. Sometimes lone seals are seen near the Romanian coast.

Fact 8. Despite the fact that there are quite a lot of mollusks in the Black Sea, there are practically no starfish, which are widespread in all warm and tropical seas. This is partly due to the fact that they lead a bottom lifestyle, and here, as we have already found out, the deeper, the less water is suitable for life due to hydrogen sulfide.

Fact 9. Many people who swam in the Black Sea have come across poisonous jellyfish that, when touched, leave painful burns. This is really unpleasant, but, fortunately, not dangerous - there are no jellyfish that can kill a person or a large animal.

Fact 10. One of the unique animals of the Black Sea is the scorpion ruff, a fish that looks like it came from somewhere else on the planet. This small marine predator, covered with spiked skin, regularly molts, shedding its skin like a snake, and sometimes once or twice a month. The meat of the scorpionfish is valued for its taste, but it is difficult to catch this fish and must be cleaned with care, as its skin is covered with poisonous mucus.

Interesting facts about nightingales
Interesting facts about nightingales
Fact 1. The famous songbirds nightingales have been popular in Europe and Russia in general since ancient times. They have always been highly valued for the melodic trills that they produce, but people in distant lands can also enjoy their singing, because nightingales usually fly to Africa for wintering. At least most of them.

Fact 2. Unlike most other birds, nightingales never build nests in trees or somewhere high on rocks. Instead, they prefer to build them either directly on the ground, in dense grass, or in thickets of bushes, where it would be difficult for any predator to get through.

Fact 3. Nightingales spend their whole lives in one place, each time after wintering in warm regions, returning to their nest. They can change their place of residence only if the nest is ruined. Moreover, young individuals, when it comes time to build their own dwelling, always settle near the nest of their parents, in which they themselves were born.

Fact 4. Nightingales are known to sing beautifully. But this is not just an innate talent - adult birds begin to teach their chicks to sing when they have just fledged. Moreover, the latter, having matured, continue to imitate the older generation, probably considering them more skilled in singing.

Fact 5. Nightingales usually sing only at night, but there is one exception. After returning to the nest after wintering, these birds first wait up to 5-7 days, simultaneously putting their dwelling in order, after which they begin to look for a mate. To do this, males sing all day long for one and a half to two weeks, mercilessly chasing competitors. Once a mate is found, the nightingale will go into its “normal mode” and will only sing after dusk.

Fact 6. These birds are distinguished by amazing voracity. Feeding mainly on insects, seeds and berries, they can absorb an amount of food equal to 80-90% of their own weight in a day! Just nightingale singing burns a lot of calories, and the birds have to somehow compensate for this energy.

Fact 7. Common nightingales, widespread throughout almost all of Russia, make very long migrations every year. Being migratory birds, they fly to the Congo and other regions of central Africa for the winter, covering a distance of 6000-7000 kilometers. And then the same amount on the way back.

Fact 8. All types of nightingales are small in size, comparable to sparrows. Together with the tail, they usually grow up to 15-17 cm, no more, and these are the largest individuals. There are also smaller ones among them.

Fact 9. During the mating season, females choose males based on their vocal abilities, so the better the male sings, the faster he will find a mate. And since nightingales improve their ability to sing with age, and with constant practice they become able to produce more and more complex trills, the older the male, the more in demand he is.

Fact 10. European nightingales were once brought to Australia by European colonialists, and have taken root perfectly in a new place. Moreover, their Australian population does not fly away for the winter, as it is warm enough here all year round, and there is enough food for the birds.

Interesting Magpie Facts
Interesting Magpie Facts
Fact 1. Despite the fact that magpies are considered frivolous birds, they are actually very smart, and their brain occupies the same volume relative to their body as that of great apes. The ingenuity of these feathered lovers of stealing shiny objects is at least indicated by the fact that they always equip their nests with an exit to the south in order to get an extra drop of heat. And the area of the brain responsible for the knowledge of the surrounding world, in the brain of a magpie, occupies approximately the same part as a similar area in the human brain.

Fact 2. These birds use their voice to communicate with relatives, but their singing cannot be called melodic, so for most people it seems like annoying screams. These cries begin in early spring, when the mating season begins for magpies. It occurs earlier than in other birds, often as early as April.

Fact 3. Magpie's nest has a spherical shape, and in size it is comparable to a soccer ball. Moreover, these relatives of crows usually build 5-6 nests, just in case, so as not to attract the attention of predators to a particular place. As a result, they occupy only one of these buildings, and carefully guard it. That does not prevent them from destroying the nests of other birds on occasion, and even eating other people's chicks and eggs.

Fact 4. Ornithologists have long tried to establish the reason for such a love of forty to shiny objects, but have not been able to come to any unambiguous conclusion. The only assumption is that they just like them, well, purely aesthetically. Because they do not use the stolen glitters in building nests, and in general they do nothing with them, just throwing them at the bottom of the nest.

Fact 5. Magpies are wintering birds, so they do not make seasonal migrations. But there are exceptions - populations living in the harsh northern regions, in the event of a particularly cold winter, can move south for a while. These birds are found on all continents, with the exception of Antarctica.

Fact 6. They can not be called either monogamous or polygamous creatures. Most often, magpies form permanent pairs, but they can break up for various reasons - just like in humans. Moreover, they choose a partner for themselves even before reaching the age of one, when they are not able to reproduce. After another year or so, having matured, the partners begin to produce offspring.

Fact 7. Magpies often store food, but not in their nest, like most birds, but on the ground, more precisely, usually under the soil surface. They can have a lot of such stash, and they always remember where everything is. Squirrels could envy them with desperate envy - these rodents also make a lot of caches with supplies, but often forget their location.

Fact 8. As observations show, magpies settle with great pleasure near human habitation, probably because in such conditions it is easier for them to get food. And they, unlike the vast majority of wild animals and birds, remember and recognize people not by smells, but by faces.

Fact 9. On the ground, magpies usually behave rather clumsily. They can walk like crows, but their paws are not very well adapted for walking, so they prefer to move in short jumps. This clumsiness of theirs instantly evaporates, as soon as they rise into the air - magpies fly quickly, and can easily write complex somersaults in the sky.

Fact 10. Despite the fact that these birds lead a territorial way of life and protect their territory from competitors, during flights they keep in flocks, more or less large. This helps them protect themselves from predators, and they always come to the aid of their relatives in trouble.

Interesting facts about animals of cold areas
Interesting facts about animals of cold areas
Fact 1. The fauna in the cold regions of the Earth is not as diverse as in the hot ones. Life in such harsh climatic conditions is extremely difficult, and various representatives of the fauna have to deal with extremely low temperatures, lack of food and other difficulties.

Fact 2. The population of different animals in cold regions is self-regulating. If herbivores have little food, there are fewer of them, which entails a decrease in the number of predators that prey on them. A striking example is the lemmings, which multiply rapidly in good years, followed by growing populations of birds and land animals for which lemmings are the main source of food. But this trend usually does not last long, and lemmings, having destroyed all food supplies in their area, begin to migrate, and most of them die during migrations. Soon, due to the lack of prey, the animals that hunt them begin to die.

Fact 3. Most animals in cold regions either have a permanent white color or acquire it for the winter during molting. This helps them to camouflage themselves in snowy areas, avoiding collisions with opponents and making hunting easier. Examples include polar wolves, polar hares and a great white owl.

Fact 4. An unprepared person, most likely, would not have lasted even a few hours in such conditions in which representatives of the animal world of cold regions survive all their lives. The aforementioned arctic wolves, for example, are found in some of the harshest regions of the Earth, where winds constantly blow, due to which the air temperature is perceived as even colder than it really is. At the same time, even in the middle of spring, the air there rarely warms up to at least -30 ° C.

Fact 5. Penguins, the indigenous inhabitants of Antarctica, are perfectly adapted to exist in such harsh conditions. Their paws, with which birds step on ice and snow, are practically devoid of nerve endings, so they do not feel pain from the cold. And in order to keep warm, penguins huddle in large flocks, and stand up tightly, gathering in a heap. Individuals warmed up in the center move aside, taking a place on the edge so that their frozen relatives can move to the center of the penguin crowd and get their share of warmth.

Fact 6. Low temperatures in some cases lead to a slowdown in metabolism in the same living beings. For example, some fish like cod in cold northern waters live much longer than their relatives belonging to the same species, but living in warmer climes.

Fact 7. The fauna of the cold regions is not rich, largely due to the poverty of the plant world. In the permafrost zone, where constant winds blow, only stunted plants with shallow roots can survive. Accordingly, there is not enough plant food for animals, and the number of herbivores remains low. And this circumstance does not allow predators hunting them to breed.

Fact 8. The largest predatory animal in cold regions is the polar bear, which used to be generally considered the largest land predator of the Earth, until the palm was taken away from it and handed over to the combed crocodile. And the largest herbivore that can survive in such conditions is the musk ox, some individuals of which sometimes have a mass of 600-650 kg.

Fact 9. All the time of wakefulness in animals living in the cold regions of the planet is spent in search of food, as their bodies expend a huge amount of energy to keep warm. And they have a hard time - for example, if the thickness of the snow reaches a certain value, the reindeer, without knowing it, spend more energy digging moss from under it than they get from eating it.

Fact 10. During the long polar summer, the fauna of the cold regions of the Arctic becomes much more diverse. Millions of migratory birds come here for the winter and serve as an important source of food for other local inhabitants. And their droppings and remains fertilize the soil.
