Early Development
Museums only started to develop in the form in which they are currently know them at the beginning of the Age of Enlightenment in Europe, when amateur scientists began to collect the material evidence of what was still widely assumed to be God's creation. By the sixteenth century many European noblemen had "cabinets of curiosities" containing the unaccountable wonders of nature, such as fossil teeth (thought to be satanic) and flint tools (thought to be thunderbolts) and, increasingly, natural and cultural artifacts gleaned from the newly discovered far-flung corners of the world. By the seventeenth century some of these collections had begun to be systematically studied and categorized. Ole Worm (1588–1654), a Danish doctor, used his vast collection to prove that so-called unicorn horns actually came from a species of Arctic whale—much to the chagrin of Scandinavian fishermen, who plied a lucrative trade in supplying such wonders.

The approach of these early scientific collectors was, as it had been in ancient Greece, encyclopedic. The mere activity of collecting similar objects together and placing them in some sort of order—the standard way of working in museums even in the twenty-first century—was then an extremely exciting activity. Barriers of accepted thought were being broken on every front. Geological specimens proved that the earth was far older than anyone had imagined, fossils demonstrated the fact of extinction (thought, by most, to be an impossibility within divine creation), and coins revealed the existence of cultures and dynasties previously unknown to history. Without his vast collection of natural history specimens, Charles Darwin (1809–1882) might never have formulated his theory of evolution. Working in the Museum of Northern Antiquities in Copenhagen, Christian Jurgensen Thomsen (1788–1865) developed the system of classifying prehistory according to the material evidence of the ages of stone, bronze, and iron, the names by which they are still known. It is significant that the formation of the British Museum (and library) was exactly contemporaneous with the publication of Denis Diderot's great Encyclopédie in France.

During the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries public museums burgeoned throughout Europe and America, and soon in other societies influenced by them, such as South America, Australia, India, and South Africa. This was in response to two considerable and growing pressures: the new urge to collect and codify all material things, and the public's desire to see all these wonders. In those days the interests of the scholar and the general public were consanguineous. Crowds gathered to see the first stuffed kangaroo or dinosaur bone or the latest archaeological discovery from Peru. The field of enquiry that was opening was so vast that collectors—and therefore museums—soon began to specialize, dividing into subject areas such as natural history and geology, archaeology, and ethnology, which continue to define their form to this day.

Abstract
Objective: This study examines specific hypotheses that both sleep loss and behavioral changes occurring with the time shifts for Daylight Savings Time (DST) significantly effect the number of fatal traffic accidents in the United States of America. Background: It has been reported that there is a significant increase in the number of automobile accidents in the spring shift to DST due to the loss of 1 h of sleep. But the extra hour gained at night with the shift from DST in the fall has been variably reported to be associated with increases and decreases in the number of automobile accidents which may reflect either behavioral anticipation with an extended late night prior to the change or the benefit of extra sleep after the change. Methods: Data from 21 years of United States' fatal automobile accidents were gathered. The mean number of accidents on the days at the time of the shifts (Saturday, Sunday and Monday) was compared to the average of the corresponding mean number of accidents on the matching day of the weeks preceding and following the shift. This was repeated for each DST shift. The number of accidents for a particular shift was also correlated with the year of the accidents. Results: There was a significant increase in accidents for the Monday immediately following the spring shift to DST (t=1.92, P=0.034). There was also a significant increase in number of accidents on the Sunday of the fall shift from DST (P

Documentaries about po*******hy are usually building to one of two different climactic conclusions: that p**n is actually a hateful enabler of r**e, or that p**n is actually a s*x-positive celebration of sensual pleasure. It seems to me that Suzanne Hillinger’s uncertain documentary about Pornhub isn’t exactly sure what its money shot should be.

Pornhub is the colossally successful p**n site, owned by a Canadian company with the airily tech-bro name of MindGeek; for years it provided a lucrative and arguably enlightened outlet for adult content creators and models who were providing a consensual, legal service to paying customers, and who were thus able to get away from the sleazier and more exploitative side of studio-based p**n and s*x work. But a 2020 exposé by New York Times reporter Nicholas Kristof revealed that alongside this perfectly respectable material, people were uploading r**e videos and child-abuse videos and the outrage meant that Pornhub’s activities were severely curtailed.

Moreover, the Fosta-Sesta laws brought in in the US against online s*x trafficking in 2018 potentially incriminated all employees. So many of the user-generating performers migrated to OnlyFans, where the videos are more closely monitored. The film shows that Pornhub’s so-called moderators had to watch nearly 1,000 videos a day and could not meaningfully regulate the content in any way. But it also shows that some of the campaigners against Pornhub are far-right Christian evangelists who simply want to stamp out po*******hy and all s*x outside marriage.

The film interviews – and is on the side of – the models and the performers as creative entrepreneurs and heroes of consenting sensuality. Fine. But so what? The film doesn’t interview the big players (including anti-Pornhub activist Laila Mickelwait), while for me it never gets to grips with the real issue for Pornhub, OnlyFans or indeed Facebook: are these sites publishers or platforms? If they derive profit from the content they host, then should they be responsible for it, or not?

At first, Nikola Zovko thought the creature curled up in his dog Squeakers’s deluxe, heated dog bed was just one of his cats. “I said, ‘Fuzzerhead, what’re you doing in Squeakers’s bed?’” he said. And that’s when it registered. “Oh that’s not Fuzzerhead. That’s a real life bobcat.”

In the week since, Zovko and his family lost and found their beloved pup Squeakers, a 10-year-old chihuahua-dachshund mix. After discovering that he had been mauled by the bobcat who stole his throne, they raised enough money for surgeries to restore him to health. The local game and fish department has used their story as an example of what to do when wildlife wander in to your home.

“Don’t handle entrapped/hurt wildlife yourself,” the Arizona game and fish department Tucson tweeted.

A bobcat lounges on a dog bed in San Manuel home Mon. The homeowner, who found it upon returning from work, suspects it entered through an unlocked doggie door. The bobcat escaped before an officer arrived. Don’t handle entrapped/hurt wildlife yourself.

The episode began on Monday when Zovko saw the bobcat, a mid-sized North American wildcat, in Squeakers’s bed and immediately called the game and fish department. Authorities advised him to leave all the doors open and keep himself and his pets clear of the wild animal.

The bobcat had snuggled into the s**g, doughnut-style dog bed with the pup’s plaid blanket. It took Zovko about 15 minutes to gingerly inch around the wild cat and get the front door open. “Whenever I tried to get the door open, the bobcat would just look at me and just start growling,” he said. “I was a bit freaked out but I understood that you know, he’s a wild kitty.”

He and his family, which includes three dogs, two cats, a sheep and a donkey, are used to living among wildlife. Over the years they have spotted raccoons, badgers, coyote and even mountain lions near their property – and all of them, pets included, know to keep their distance and avoid disturbing wild animals. But they never expected that a bobcat would leap over their 5ft fence, let himself in through the dog door, and settle in.

By the time game and fish officials arrived, the bobcat had shown himself out. In a rigorous inspection of his house afterward, Zovko discovered his son’s terrified little cat hiding behind the couch – but Squeakers the dog was nowhere to be found. There were no signs of struggle, no blood or clumps of hair.

The next afternoon, the family’s two poodles discovered that their brother returned – quite a bit worse for wear. Zovko rushed Squeakers to the veterinarian, who stitched him up and tended to his wounds. He had clearly been in a scuffle with the bobcat, and it’s unclear how he’d gotten away. The veterinarian said he was lucky that his stomach wasn’t perforated or ruptured, though he sustained deep lacerations to his back.

Given Squeakers’s age, and the extent of his injuries, Zovko said the family is monitoring him closely, to make sure none of his cuts become infected.

They had adopted him from a shelter, where he had ended up after being hit by a car – so he had always been a survivor, Zovko said. “Squeakers always does what Squeakers wants,” he said. “He’s the smallest of our dogs, but he’s still the alpha.”

Bobcats are found across Arizona, especially in the Sonoran desert, rimrock and chaparral regions, according to the game and fish department. It’s not uncommon to spot them on the outskirts of urban areas, and in wildland and rural communities. They generally keep away from people, though they might wander into back yards seeking shade or water, or stalking birds or small pets.

Zovko said and his wife had been careful to store pet food away from doors and windows, where wild animals might see or smell it. It’s possible that the bobcat was hunting Squeakers or one of the family cats, and was thwarted – but that still doesn’t explain why he chose to come inside and lounge around for so long. Indoors, nothing had been misplaced or damaged. The wild animal had just made himself comfortable.
