And the second thing that fiction does is that it generates empathy. When you watch a TV show or a movie, you are looking at things that are happening to other people. Fiction is something you make of 33 letters and a handful of punctuation, and you, alone, use your imagination to create the world that inhabits it and look around with other people's eyes. You begin to experience things, to visit places and worlds that you would never know. You will learn that the outside world is you too. You become someone else, and when you return to your world, something in you will change a little.

There are no bad authors for children if children want to read them and look for their books because all children are different. They find the stories they need, and they go inside those stories. The beaten, shabby idea is fascinating for them. After all, a child discovers it for the first time. Do not distract children from reading just because you think they are reading the wrong things. Literature that you don't like is the path to books that you may like. And not everyone has the same taste as you.

In fiction there are two purposes:

First, it makes you addicted to reading. The desire to know what will happen next, the desire to turn the page, the need to continue, even if it is difficult, because someone got into trouble, and you have to find out how it will end… this is a real drive. It makes you learn new words, think differently, keep moving forward. Discovering that reading in itself is a pleasure. Once you realize this, you are on the path to constant reading.

I was in New York once and heard a conversation about building private prisons, a fast-growing industry in America. The prison industry needs to plan for its future growth - how many cameras will they need? What will be the number of prisoners in 15 years? And they found that they could predict all this very easily, using the simplest algorithm based on surveys, which a percentage of 10 and 11-year-olds could not read. And, of course, can't read for pleasure.

Undoubtedly, it is in my interest for people to read, for people to read fiction, for libraries and librarians to exist and to promote a love of reading and the existence of places where you can read. So I'm biased as a writer. But I am much more biased as a reader.
