Meet Edward Bukoma a PIP Farmer in Bunahayoti community in Nabweya subcounty Bududa.

He is integrating various interventions such as trenches, grasses planted along the trenches, calliandra planted at the boundaries and in the gardens, he has planted agroforestry trees such as Cordia among others.

He is applying organic manure which has rejuvenated his crops. He has planted coffee in line and bananas are also in line. He received training from CommonGround .

Site group committees and local government officials in Bududa district have had an intra site exchange visits to different restoration sites.

The visits are aimed at creating cross learning visit among the different site groups. The project is working with different site groups to restore the degraded areas through planting trees, establishment of sustainable land management among others.

Entrepreneurial groups supported by the CommonGround Project have started receiving in-kind microgrant support from the project.

The micro-grant initiative is aimed at providing seed capital support to entrepreneurial groups that have demonstrated readiness to transition from planning to implementation of their business activities.

An Apiary Expert from Netherlands is in Uganda to meet & engage different Apiary groups in Rwenzori, Elgon and Kigezi.

The aim is for the expert to understand how Apiary Groups in these regions are doing in terms of honey production business, access to market for honey, value addition, key challenges among others.

Day1: Graduation ceremonies for PIP Innovators in the 2nd cohort communities are happening in Bududa district.

The graduations are to take four days and today the graduations are taking place in Bunabutiti, Bulumino and Bukhatondi-Bushimwemwe communities.

Graduation ceremonies are aimed at mobilizing communities for the farmer to farmer trainings for Generation One farmers.

During the graduation Day, the Generation One farmers present the household PIPs to the community and also perform different activities including Music Dance and Drama that has PIP messages.

After the presentations the PIP innovators were awarded certificates for having successfully completed the 10 weeks trainings and also transferring PIP knowledge to Generation One farmers.

After a series of trainings in governance, starting with Coop, financial literacy, business plan development, visioning, good agronomic practices, and post-harvest handling, the Bumati and Shienga cooperative societies in the Bududa district have started realizing improvements in business.

The groups have started realizing an increase in coffee production, and soon they are to have bumper sales. They are both bulking the coffee and drying it on clean materials, which is maintaining the quality. Bumati has 84 members, and Shienga has more than 202 members.

This season, Shienga Cooperative has already bought and bulked coffee worth Shs40 million and has a motorized pulping machine, which helps to pulp over 1000 kg of coffee per hour.

Gardens along the Ndorangi restoration site, in Kitumba subcounty, Kabale district, have started improving.

This, according to farmers, is because of restoration activities that have controlled erosion, hence retaining fertility along the hills.

Community members in Rwenzori region (Ntoroko and Bunyangabu districts) are embracing innovative practices to combat erosion and enhance their soil’s fertility on various restoration sites.

In some areas, the communities are meticulously laying stone lines (bunds), along the contours of their land. In other parts, trenches are being dug with precision, designed to catch every drop of water where it falls. This concerted effort reflects a deep understanding of the delicate balance between nature and agriculture.

Community members are also planting grasses along the newly established stone lines and trenches, and the grasses are aimed at stabilising the soils and the stone lines.

All these activities are going hand in hand with training sessions on contour line tracing and marking. The collective actions have not only improved their environment but have also strengthened the bonds within the community.
