Did you know? The highest fall without a parachute that was survived was from over 33,330 feet?

The highest fall without a parachute that was survived is held by Vesna Vulović, a flight attendant from Serbia. On January 26, 1972, she was the sole survivor of an airplane bombing mid-air, which caused her to fall from a height of 33,330 feet. The plane exploded into three pieces over Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) during a flight from Stockholm, Sweden, to Belgrade, Serbia.

Vulović’s survival was attributed to her being pinned down by a food cart in the tail end of the fuselage (the aircraft’s main body), which separated from the rest of the plane and crash-landed in a heavily wooded area near the Czechoslovak village of Srbská Kamenice. The fuselage landed in thick snow at a favorable angle, which likely saved Vulović’s life.

Additionally, Vulović’s physicians determined that her low blood pressure caused her to quickly pass out when the cabin depressurized, which prevented her heart from bursting upon impact. She was found screaming inside the wreckage by a local villager, who was able to administer vital first aid before rescuers arrived.

Although Vulović survived, she sustained extremely serious injuries and spent the following days in a coma. She suffered a fractured skull, two broken legs, three broken vertebrae, a fractured pelvis, several broken ribs, and temporary paralysis below the waist. Amazingly, Vulović was able to walk again after ten months, albeit with a permanent limp due to the twisting of her spine. She had no memory of the crash or of anything from the following month.
