All Saint Day

November 1st is the ancient holiday that celebrates and memorializes the martyrs of the Christian faith. Who is your favorite martyr?

Mine is the Apostle Peter

Simon Peter was chosen by Jesus to be the rock on which Jesus built His church but Peter’s path was a wild one.

He sometimes tried to boss Jesus around and said foolish things, causing Jesus to say to him, “get behind me, Satan”. Yikes!

He tried to defend Jesus during his arrest by cutting off the ear of one guy!

Later he famously denied Jesus 3 times showing devastating weakness.

After Jesus’s resurrection, He reinstated Peter as his disciple and apostle.

Peter went on to spread the good news of Jesus’s resurrection and of salvation, converting uncountable numbers of people. He was instrumental in establishing Christian doctrine such as declaring all food good (not just Kosher food)! WooHoo for bacon!

Peter boldly defended his faith throughout his life until he was martyred for his faith. He was the one who chose to be crucified upside-down so it wouldn’t be like his savior’s.

When you think you are not “good enough” to be called a Christian, remember how much grace was extended to Simon Peter as a beautiful reminder that “we all fall short of the glory of God” and that faith in Jesus leads to salvation and relationship with Him.
