Emmer Martin Lancaster was the first African-American graduate of the Municipal University of Akron.

He was born in 1898 to Frank and Leah Lancaster and was raised in Akron, attending Central High School. In 1918 he started attending the Municipal University of Akron. He lived on Big Falls Avenue and had a 3 mile walk to school. During his first semester Lancaster served in the Student Army Training Corps (S.A.T.C.) and was honorably discharged in December 1918. He also participated in a number of extracurricular activities such as baseball (left field), track (50 yard dash) and the debate team. He graduated with an A.B. in 1921 and then went on to graduate from the Western Reserve School of Law in 1927.

Available occupations were barbers, tailors, hairdressers, boatsmen, whitewashers, hod carriers and preachers

Most Negroes lived in area of N. Broadway, Furnace, and Cuyahoga Streets.
