Black Housing Leader Spotlight 🌟

Meet Dorothy Mae Richardson, the Pittsburgh native who helped created and shape the modern day pro-housing movement.

In the 1960s, while attempting to help find housing for a blind Black couple, Richardson realized how challenging it was for Black Americans to find housing options that fit their needs and had proper upkeep.

In response, she formed a group called Citizens Against Slum Housing (CASH) to force landlords to maintain their properties better for residents.Eventually CASH expanded from advocating for stricter code enforcement to focusing on increasing Black homeownership.

Richardson and the other Black women who formed CASH established a $1M revolving homeownership and home repair loan after convincing 16 banks to contribute to a fund that would help offset the effects of redlining in Pittsburgh.
