Yeah, and then this happened... :)

10x Buff Orpington and 10x Black Australorp Chicks. Meat and eggs aside, they will be helping us in our land reclamation efforts by providing a continuous supply of fresh compost.

We will be hatching our eggs towards the end of the year!

Row #7 finished.

To create each row, we first displace an average of 6" deep of silt / sand to get to the firmer clay. That's over 9.26 cubic yards of sand per row.

Despite the laborious work, here in a semi-arid climate it has a purpose; to help hold the water in the upper layer of soil rather than allowing it to seep straight down.

Starting the eighth row.

Pretty sure we will grow enough food to feed eight people next year. :)

Day three of the garden. Every post hole has been dug, t-posts set and all the brush has been cleared inside and along the outside of the fence line.

Up next, setting the remaining wooden posts / bracing and then installing the woven wire fencing.

We finally took some time out to make a little 1150 sq ft garden area. After the rodent invasion this year, it is needed.

la Zuke

While the goal is not to grow your zucchinis large as they become soggy, stringy and tough, la Zuke blew past the 6-8" picking mark overnight.

So she has been named and selected as our land race variety of zucchinis.

la Zuke demonstrates good tolerance to cold and heat. She fruits quickly and grow fruit from flowering to picking in just a few days.
