Dear COLHOA members,
After our initial inquiry on Monday, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) returned our call on Thursday, August 10. They reiterated what we heard from the DNR, which is that this disease has been going around NE Indiana lakes and decimating the crappie populations. IDEM indicated the most important step we could take is to clean up the dead fish quickly, as the rotting carcasses will release harmful bacteria into the lake. Their recommendation is that folks stay out of the lake until a few weeks after all the dead fish are removed. If the dead fish aren’t removed from the lake, they suggest we stay out until the fish have completely decomposed.
We ask that all members take responsibility for cleaning up the fish on their shoreline as quickly as possible. If you are able and have a neighbor who may have trouble cleaning their own shoreline, please clean it for them. This is a critical step to getting the lake back in shape as quickly as possible.
While we can’t be sure how the disease entered the lake, it is quite possible that it came in on a boat. Please make sure you are following proper cleaning procedures before launching your boat on our lake. For more information, please visit https://events.in.gov/event/clean_drain_and_dry_your_boat_to_stop_invasive_species.
We will also be mailing a copy of this information to all homeowners and will include the most recent meeting minutes.
We thank you for your partnership in working together to help clean up any dead fish and working together to help prevent diseases from entering the lake.
