It may surprise you, but 20 years ago such a country as the Czech Republic did not exist. After the Second World War, Czechoslovakia, consisting of two countries, came under the influence of the USSR, and a communist system was established on its territory. Only in 1989, after the Velvet Revolution, Czechoslovakia declared its independence, and Vaclav Havel was elected as the first president.
However, the Czech Republic and Slovakia could not hold together, and on January 1, 1993, the former Soviet republic split into two independent countries. There are few cases in world history when countries part ways peacefully by mutual consent, and the Czech Republic and Slovakia are one of them. Both countries joined the European Union in 2004.
