She was so beautiful. Too bad she was murdered so young.
Today we remember the luminous Natalie Wood on her heavenly birthday. ποΈπ
Born Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko on July 20, 1938 in San Francisco β gone November 29, 1981 at just 43 years old. Would have been 88 today. One of the most naturally gifted actresses Hollywood ever produced β and one of its most heartbreaking losses. π
Her mother Maria β a Russian immigrant who had survived extraordinary hardship β was utterly convinced from the moment Natalie was born that her daughter was destined for stardom. She wasn't wrong. At four years old little Natasha caught the eye of a director on a film set in Santa Rosa. At five she was in her first film. At eight she was holding her own alongside Maureen OβHara and Edmund Gwenn in Miracle on 34th Street. π
That little girl who believed in Santa Claus grew up to be one of the most emotionally fearless actresses of the 1950s and 60s. Rebel Without a Cause at 16 alongside James Dean and Dennis Hopper. West Side Story. Splendor in the Grass. Love with the Proper Stranger. Three Oscar nominations before she was 25. π
She attended ballet classes as a child alongside Jill St. John and Stefanie Powers. She spoke English and Russian fluently at home. She was afraid of dark water her entire life β a fear that dated back to a childhood accident on a film set where she fell into a cold river. That fear followed her. π
Her daughter Natasha Gregson Wagner β who has her mother's eyes and her mother's warmth β produced a beautiful documentary in 2020 called Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind. What remains behind is extraordinary. Miracle on 34th Street. West Side Story. A filmography that still takes your breath away 40 years later. β¨
Rest easy, Natalie. Still the most beautiful thing in every frame. π
