Today we proudly stand in purple in honor of the incredible military children at Basilica School of Saint Mary's.

As a Marine, a father, and the founder of Valor Homes, I’ve seen firsthand the strength behind the uniform, and so much of that strength comes from the families who serve alongside our men and women in uniform. Our military kids don’t wear the flag on their shoulder, but they carry its weight in their hearts every single day.

On Purple Up Day, we recognize their sacrifice, the moves, the long deployments, the goodbyes, and the quiet courage they show through it all.

In a place grounded in faith like the Basilica School, we’re reminded that service is not just a duty, it’s a calling. A calling to love, to sacrifice, and to stand firm in faith. As it says in Scripture, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13)

To our military children: you are seen, you are valued, and you are deeply appreciated. You are a vital part of the mission, and your resilience reflects the very best of this nation.

Happy Navy Chiefs Birthday!

Today we celebrate the birthday of the United States Navy Chief Petty Officer.

Since 1893, Navy Chiefs have stood as the backbone of the fleet leaders forged through experience, tested under pressure, and trusted with the mission when it matters most. The anchors they wear aren’t just rank… they represent accountability, deckplate leadership, and an unwavering commitment to those they lead.
As a Marine, I can tell you firsthand, when a Chief speaks, people listen. Because they’ve earned it.

Maj Jim Capers - Marine - Warrior - Hero - Medal of Honor🎖

In the long history of the United States Marine Corps, certain names carry a gravity that transcends rank, time, and even official recognition. Among those names is Maj. James Capers Jr., a Force Reconnaissance Marine whose actions in Vietnam have been spoken of with reverence for decades. (Full story in the comments.)

During the mission near Phu Loc, Team Broadminded was ambushed by a large enemy force. The ambush triggered a fierce firefight that quickly turned into a desperate struggle. Capers was struck repeatedly by shrapnel and gunfire. By the end of the engagement, he had sustained 19 wounds, among them was a broken leg. But he refused to relinquish command.

Despite his injuries, Capers continued to direct the defense and coordinate support. He called in artillery fire, organized the movement of his Marines, and maintained control of the situation even as his physical condition deteriorated. At one point, as a helicopter attempted to extract the wounded, it struggled to gain altitude under the weight of those aboard. Capers reportedly tried to sacrifice himself by leaving the aircraft to ensure the others could escape. His Marines and the crew refused to leave him behind.

Only after every member of his team had been safely evacuated did Capers allow himself to be treated. All of the Marines survived.

For 50 years, Capers had the support of veterans’ organizations, filmmakers, historians, and fellow Marines, who continued to amplify his story. That campaign bore fruit in 2026, as the House and Senate both voted to advance his Medal of Honor and send it to the Resolute Desk for the president’s signature.
