Presidents' Day date began in 1800. Following the death of George Washington in 1799, his February 22 birthday became a perennial day of remembrance.
At the time, Washington was venerated as the most important figure in American history, and events like the 1832 centennial of his birth and the start of construction of the Washington Monument in 1848 were cause for national celebration.

Alexandria VA has the biggest GW parade in the country - if you’re local, come to Old Town. You can have lunch then watch the parade at 1pm (Feb 21)

Blue skies over Jones Point Lighthouse.

🔹Jones Point lighthouse is one of the last riverine lighthouses and the last one in the Chesapeake Bay Area.

🔹The lighthouse operated from 1856 to 1926. It was designed to help ships avoid the shifting underwater shoals in the Potomac River.

🔹The lighthouse keepers were appointed by the President and got to live in the 4 bedroom lighthouse. Benjamin Greenwood, the longest serving keeper, lived with his second wife and 11 of his 14 children in the building. Talk about cramped spaces! But they were never for want of visitors.

It’s been a favorite spot for Alexandrians to enjoy throughout the years.

I’m hoping the Year of the Tiger ushers in healing and joy to all!
