I recently spent four days at an ashram observing silence.
That’s right…no talking.at.all.
For four days.
All day. Everyday.
Prior to leaving, many of my friends exclaimed, “oh that sounds torturous,” or “I would never make it.”
Honestly, I had those doubts for my own self and full disclosure: I was a bit scared. I had never spent such concentrated time at an ashram, or monastery, or commune, or village of sorts.
Nonetheless, there I was in middle of nowhere, surrounded by gorgeous green nature, an amazing view of the beautiful blue ridge mountains, and absolutely no cell service whatsoever.
With my expectations and apprehensions left at home, surprisingly, it didn’t take too long to realize how easy it could be to just go with the flow. To flow with it until I found my own flow. With no specific agenda and nowhere to be, I was free to flow at my own pace - in fact, to see the yogis and swamis seemingly glide everywhere they went and fully arrive at every moment of their intention, it was easy to desire that level of flow.
I learned a ton in such a short amount of time….easy stuff like, I don’t need to speak as often as I do, not all my thoughts and opinions need to be vocalized, but I also relearned so many ways of communicating kindness, intentions, and interacting with others. I learned to slow down and listen…really listen…to the wonderful world around me.
I learned to respect my need for stillness.
Silence is often so loud and uncomfortable for me, so learning to push through that to get to the beauty and peace that it truly offers was so worth it. It took me getting away into the middle of nowhere to slow down, calm down, become friends with Silence, and to hear all the amazing secrets it had to tell me.
It was such a wonderful experience and turns out, it wasn’t so scary after all.
It’s October.
The month of scary things.
The month to conquer your fears and rid yourself of the scary things that keep you from finding your joy.
Boo! 👻….see? Look how brave you are! Not even I was able to scare you.😉
