Chicago’s historic Lincoln Park Zoo is one of the world's last remaining zoos offering completely free admission.

It sits right in the middle of a busy city, but inside its gates, you will find a quiet green space filled with trees and wildlife.

The zoo covers about 49 acres of land near the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan.

It welcomes millions of visitors every single year who want to explore nature without buying a ticket.

This famous park started all the way back in 1868. It is one of the oldest zoos in North America.

The zoo actually began with a very simple gift when New York City sent over a pair of swans.

Over time, people donated more animals, including a bear cub and a puma. In 1878, city leaders made a rule that the zoo must always stay free for everyone.

Today, it is an independent park run by a special group that keeps this amazing tradition alive.

Most of the money needed to feed the animals and care for the grounds comes from kind donors, zoo members, and gift shop sales.

Even though the zoo is free, it is packed with incredible habitats. Visitors can see more than 1,100 animals from around 200 different species.

There is a large African savanna exhibit where tall giraffes walk past zebras under the sky.

You can also visit a primate house to watch chimpanzees and gorillas swing on branches behind large glass walls.

There are also sleek lions resting on rocks, colorful penguins swimming underwater, and a special farm area where kids can meet cows and learn about agriculture.

The zoo is also an official arboretum, which means it is a protected home for rare trees and beautiful flowers.

Some of the large oak trees on the property are even older than the city of Chicago itself.

Scientists at the zoo work hard every day to protect endangered animals and study local urban wildlife.

It stands as a wonderful place where people of all ages can learn about our planet for free.

Would you regret buying a home right now? Most recent buyers say no.
