Keep your Kitchen Appliances in Top Shape.

There are several things you can do to maintain essential kitchen appliances to prolong their life.

Refrigerator: Clean the condenser soils regularly. They are covered with dirt, grime, debris, and pet hair which overheat the refrigerator. Overheating leads to overworking, leading to the early demise of the refrigerator. Get to the coils by removing the grille at the bottom or back of the fridge and vacuum to clear debris. For Sub-Zero refrigerators, the coils are usually located on the top of the unit.

Dishwasher: The biggest, most important thing you can do to keep your dishwasher running well is to clean food off your dishes before you put them in. Food bits get stuck in crevices, gum up moving parts and cause bacteria to form. Use a dishwasher cleaning product every three to six months to remove calcium buildup. Calcium deposits can clog he dishwasher's sprayer arm and effect cleaning efficiency. Another trick to remove calcium buildup is to place a cup of white vinegar on the top shelf of an empty dishwasher and run a load with hot water.

Microwave: Clean your microwave regularly to remove food particles. To remove stubborn food bits, boil a cup of water or white vinegar in the microwave to loosen the food particles, which you can then easily wipe off with a sponge.

Stove/Oven: Stop putting aluminum foil on the bottom of your oven to catch food spills. Aluminum foil blocks airflow and can interfere with the heating element, causing it to fail or require re-calibration. To keep a smooth-top stove looking new, scrape off burned food bits with a razor blade and cleaning the surface with glass cleaner.

When purchasing a home, your credit score is crucial. It is important to keep track of it. You can receive a copy of your credit score report every twelve months from each of the three credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, Transunion) by going on AnnualCreditReport.com. [Make sure to cancel the trial offered by the site to get your credit report for free.]
Now if you check your reports and find suspicious activity or that you may be the victim of identity theft/fraud, there are steps you can take. Alert one of the three bureaus and they can alert the other two bureaus and there will be a free 90-day fraud alert, which will tell lenders to confirm your identity before extending credit. However, for better security, freeze your credit. This will prevent anyone from getting loans in your name. This will cost you $10 per credit bureau to place the freeze and then $12 dollars to lift it when you apply for new credit. This may seem costly but its a much greater hassle to be the victim of identity theft.
66% of consumers were the first to notice fraudulent charges on their account-- not their financial institution. By being proactive keeping track of your accounts, you protect yourself and your future.

5 Tips for Enjoying Your Backyard This Summer

As temperatures heat up across the country, you can make sure this is the best summer ever with the following 10 tips, time-savers, water-care ideas, and maintenance and safety suggestions for backyard living.

1 – Safety first. Follow a few common sense rules in the backyard and around the pool. Keep each child within arm's length at all times, designate an adult as water watcher, ensure that the pool's fence is always locked, and install both gate and pool alarms to alert you to unsupervised pool use.

2 – Use plants to dress up the landscape. A bit of backyard greenery can be both pretty and functional. Use shrubs for form, foliage-heavy plants for color, and sturdy perennials for reliability. Plenty of pretty perennials, such as coneflowers and black-eyed Susans, require little tending and offer cheery blooms throughout the growing season.

3 – Add years to backyard furnishings. If mildew spots appear on outside chairs and tables, wash the fabric according to manufacturer directions and dry in the sun. Then mix together equal parts lemon juice and salt; spread on the stain. Dry in the sun again and rinse thoroughly.

4 – Organize backyard toys and tools. Two simple storage rules for keeping backyard clutter to a minimum: air out wet things by storing them in big mesh bags or open-weave crates; toss all the little bits—sunscreen, dive toys, etc. —into a clear plastic shoe organizer hung on the fence where everyone can easily find them.

5 – Stay healthy with a water workout. According to the Centers for Disease Control, just 21 minutes a day of exercising in a pool can decrease your risk of chronic disease. If swimming laps doesn't excite you, there are other great ways to get moving. Try kickboxing using water as the resistance and enjoy the benefits of strength, endurance and balance. Depending on intensity, a typical water exercise session of 40 to 50 minutes can burn up to 600 calories.
