250 Years of Freedom, Paid for by Sacrifice — A Humble Memorial Day Reflection from a Michigan small business owner.
Memorial Day means something different when you’ve worn the uniform, raised a family, built a business, and watched this country change over time.
For many, it’s a long weekend.
For others, it’s deeply personal.
As America approaches its 250th anniversary, I believe this Memorial Day carries even greater meaning. For nearly two and a half centuries, America has stood as one of the greatest experiments in freedom, self-governance, individual liberty, and opportunity the world has ever known.
The American spirit has always been rooted in independence. Americans were never meant to be subjects. We were created to be free people — capable of building businesses, raising families, worshipping openly, speaking freely, defending our homes, and charting our own futures. That fierce spirit of independence and liberty is woven into the DNA of this nation.
But those freedoms were never guaranteed. They were preserved by sacrifice.
Today I think about the men and women who never made it home. The ones who sacrificed birthdays, anniversaries, futures, and families so the rest of us could live free. Memorial Day is not about politics. It’s about gratitude, remembrance, and responsibility.
As a veteran, I understand freedom has never been free.
Like millions of other veterans who never faced actual battle, I still stood ready, willing, and able to die for this country, our Republic, and our liberties if called upon to do so. We understood that those American ideals — freedom, self-determination, faith, family, constitutional rights, and sovereignty — are what made us Americans. We were willing to leave it all on the battlefield to protect our families, loved ones, and our way of life.
Not every veteran is a war hero, but every veteran accepted the possibility of the sacrifice. Every veteran took an oath knowing the ultimate price could someday be required.
As a husband of 35 years, a father, and grandfather, I understand the importance of preserving the blessings and liberties we pass to the next generation.
As a business owner, I recognize that the ability to build, create, own property, speak freely, worship openly, and pursue opportunity only exists because generations of Americans stood willing to defend it...with their lives when necessary.
Memorial Day reminds us that liberty is fragile, service matters, and freedom carries responsibility.
May we never become so comfortable that we forget the cost paid by others.
This weekend, take a moment to honor the fallen.
Find a minute to actually say a prayer for the families who still carry the loss.
Buy and fly an American-made, American flag proudly!
Celebrate America.
Celebrate freedom.
Celebrate the independent spirit that built this nation.
Say a prayer for our leaders...
And never take America for granted.
God Bless our fallen heroes.
God Bless our military and their families.
God Bless our President.
And God Bless the United States of America.
Humbly submitted, Geoffrey A. Brown
